GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept its home opener against Swarthmore College on Saturday. In the first game, the Profs had an 11-0 shutout in five innings and they won 6-1 in the second contest.
Right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) threw a no-hitter in the opener and she recorded her third shutout on the season. Singer (7-2) struck out seven batters. Sarina Lowe took the loss for the Garnet. Lowe (1-3) gave up 11 hits and seven earned runs.
For the Profs, left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) went three for three with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) contributed with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) each had one hit (a triple) and two RBIs.
Catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Absegami) and first baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) added one hit and one RBI apiece. Designated player Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) had one run scored and one RBI. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) registered a double and scored two runs.
Rowan led 7-0 after scoring five runs in the first inning and two in the second. In the first, Davis drove in Veneziano with a single to right center field. Becker’s ground out scored Davis and Roselle came home on a sac fly by Stevens. Leskanic knocked in two runs with a triple. Roselle recorded a two RBI double in the second inning.
The Profs tacked on four runs in the fourth and the game ended early because of the eight run rule. Roselle led off with a single and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Labas had a sacrifice fly, scoring Becker. Arcella plated the final two runs with a triple.
In the nightcap, righty Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) pitched five innings for the win. Minix (4-3) scattered three hits and allowed one unearned run. Right-hander Erika Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) was on the mound for the final two innings for her first save. The losing pitcher was Melissa O’Connor (3-3). She totaled six strikeouts.
Leskanic paced the Profs with three hits (four at bats), two RBIs, a double and one run scored. Davis was three for three with one RBI. Stevens collected two hits in three at bats, two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) had two hits in three trips to the plate and one run scored.
For Swarthmore, third baseman Rose Pitkin was two for three with two doubles. Center fielder Kate Smayda had one hit (two at bats) and one RBI. Left fielder Zoe Hendrickson scored the run.
Rowan went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Roselle reached first with a single. She went to second on a walk by designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland). Stevens plated Roselle with a single. The Garnet tied the score in third inning. Hendrickson got on base with a fielder’s choice. Smayda doubled to left center field and Hendrickson scored.
In the fifth, Davis had a RBI single that put the Profs ahead 2-1. Rowan added three runs in the sixth inning. Becker doubled and came home on Steven’s single. Leskanic had a double down the right field line that scored Stevens and Minch.
Next week, Rowan hosts Ursinus College on Thursday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
