Rowan Ends Florida Trip With Two Wins

KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team ended its Florida trip with two wins on Friday. Rowan blanked Carthage College (WI), 9-0 in five innings and defeated Wis.-River Falls, 2-1.

The Profs return from the Rebel Spring Games with a 9-5 record. Right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) pitched the shutout against Carthage (4-6). Singer (6-2) only allowed one hit and she struck out nine batters. Righty Alyssa Schrader had the loss on the mound. She (0-2) went three innings and gave up six earned runs.

Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) led Rowan with three hits (three at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) contributed with two hits in three at bats, two RBIs, two runs scored and a homer. Designated player Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) added one hit (three at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) chipped in with two hits in two trips to the plate, one double, one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Absegami) and first baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) each added one RBI.

Rowan scored four runs in the first inning. Becker drove in Veneziano and right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) with a single. Veneziano and Davis both reached base with a single. Stevens had a RBI single, scoring left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta). Becker came home on a bunt single by Minch. The Profs led 5-0 after one run in the third inning. With one out, Minch recorded a double and she crossed the plate on Labas’ single to center field.

Rowan tacked on two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Arcella led off with a single and Veneziano followed with a home run. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) had a double in the fifth inning with two outs. Arcella had a two run shot that ended the game early because of the eight run rule.

Against Wis.-River Falls (5-9), right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) pitched a complete game for the win. Minix (3-3) scattered four hits and totaled seven strikeouts. Rose Tusa was the losing pitcher. In seven innings, she (2-4) allowed four hits and one earned run. Tusa struck out six hitters.

Davis was one for three with one RBI. Roselle, Becker and Leskanic each had one hit in three at bats. Becker and Leskanic also scored one run apiece.
For Wis.-River Falls, second baseman Hayley Buchanan went one for three with one RBI. Catcher Shawna Middleton registered one hit (three bats) and one run scored. Center fielder Haley Selkirk and first baseman Ashley Goettl had one hit (three at bats) apiece.

The Falcons got on the scoreboard first with one run in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Middleton and Selkirk recorded back-to-back singles. Buchanan plated Middleton with a single. The Profs tied the score in the sixth with a RBI single by Davis. She drove in Leskanic who led off with a single. Rowan scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning. Becker reached base on an error and also came home on an error.

Next week, Rowan plays at Gwynedd-Mercy College on Tuesday, March 22 at 3 p.m.
