KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team improved to 7-5 on the season with two wins at the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday. Rowan shut out Centenary College, 4-0 in the first game and defeated Anderson University (IN), 6-4 in the second.
Against Centenary (3-2), right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) pitched 6.2 innings for the win. Singer (4-2) only gave up two hits and she struck out eight batters. It was the first loss for righty Kristin Durborow (sr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.). Durborow (2-1) allowed eight hits and four earned runs in seven innings.
Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) led the Profs with two doubles (four at bats) and one RBI. Right fielder Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) was two for three with one run scored. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) each contributed with one hit and one RBI. Catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Absegami) added one RBI.
The game was scoreless for four innings then Rowan had one run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) walked and stole second base. Roselle drove in Veneziano with a double. The Profs added three more runs in the sixth inning. Becker led off with a single and went to third on shortstop Ashley Minch’s (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) single. Stevens reached base on a fielder’s choice and Becker came home. Leskanic knocked in Minch with a single. Arcella later had a bunt single, scoring Leskanic.
Singer registered the win in relief versus Anderson (4-4). She (5-2) pitched 2.2 innings and only allowed two hits. Natalie Moorhouse was the losing pitcher. In 1.1 innings, she (1-2) gave up four hits and two earned runs.
Veneziano led the way with three hits (three at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) registered two RBIs with one hit (two at bats). Becker collected three hits in four trips to the plate and one RBI. Arcella tallied two hits (three at bats), a triple and two runs scored.
For the Ravens, Moorhouse was one for three with two RBIs. Center fielder Katie Lee and left fielder Lys Hess each had one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Designated player Lauren Smith, catcher Stephanie Atkins, first baseman Megan Kruse and Hess all scored one run.
Anderson scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score at four. With one out, Kruse doubled to center field then stole third. She came home on Hess’ single. Lee later plated Hess with a single. Rowan won the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Leskanic had a lead off single and Arcella followed with a bunt single. Both runners advanced a base on Veneziano’s hit. Davis walked to score Leskanic and Arcella crossed the plated when Roselle walked.
The Ravens were ahead 2-1 after the first inning. Moorhouse knocked in Smith and Atkins with a single. In the bottom half, Veneziano crossed the plate on a single by Becker. Rowan took the lead, 3-2 in the second inning. Arcella tripled in a run and she came home on a sac bunt by Veneziano. The Profs led 4-2 after scoring one run in the fourth. Veneziano reached base with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Davis singled and Veneziano went home.
Rowan ends its Florida trip on Friday, March 18 with games against Carthage College (WI) and Wis.-River Falls at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
