KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team won two more games at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday. Rowan defeated Wis.-Platteville, 5-0 and Springfield College, 12-1 in six innings.
The Profs improve to 5-5 on the season. Right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was the winning pitcher against Wis.-Platteville (3-4). Minix (2-3) went six innings and only allowed one hit. She totaled five strikeouts. Righty Erika Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) was on the mound for the final inning. She struck out two of the three batters she faced. Amber Bishop was the losing pitcher. In four innings, Bishop gave up four hits and two earned runs.
Catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor) led the Profs with three hits (three at bats), two RBIs, a double and one run scored. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) each contributed with one hit and one RBI while center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) added one RBI. Right fielder Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) and Roselle had one double apiece.
Rowan went ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Stevens drove in two runs with a double and came home on a sac bunt by Veneziano. Landi registered a RBI single, scoring second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley). The Profs’ last run came in the fifth. With one out, Stevens hit a single and was replaced by pinch runner Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). Escudero went to second when Arcella was hit by a pitch. Roselle plated Escudero with a double.
Against Springfield (2-3), right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) went four innings for the victory. Singer (3-2) scattered three hits and gave up one earned run. Knorr tallied three strikeouts in the last two innings. Righty Katie Anderson gave up five hits and five earned runs in the loss.
Roselle went two for four with one RBI, a double and two runs scored. Becker tallied one hit (two at bats), two RBIs, a double and one run scored. Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) collected one hit in two trips to the plate, two RBIs and she scored three runs. First baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) was two for four with two RBIs and a double. Arcella had two hits (four at bats), three RBIs and a double.
The Profs led 7-0 after scoring five runs in the first inning and two in the third. Becker knocked in the first two runs with a double, scoring Veneziano and Roselle. Minch drove in Landi and Becker with a single. Labas singled and Minch crossed the plate.
In the third, Arcella’s double scored Minch and Escudero. Rowan added one more run in the fifth inning when Labas had a RBI double. The Profs’ four runs in the sixth inning ended the game early because of the eight run rule. Roselle doubled home Veneziano. Stevens had single that plated Roselle. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) walked with the bases loaded and right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) came home-. Minch scored on a single by Arcella.
Rowan plays two more games on Wednesday, March 16 in Florida. The softball team faces Centenary College at 9 a.m. and Anderson University (IN) at 11 a.m.
