KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team won two games at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday. Rowan defeated Millikin University (IL), 9-2 and Utica College (NY), 4-1.
The Profs improve to 3-5 on the season. Against Millikin, right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) pitched five innings for the victory. She (2-2) gave up one hit and two unearned runs. Righty Erika Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) was on the mound for the final two innings. Big Blue pitcher Whitney Schafman suffered the loss and went five innings.
Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) totaled three hits in four at bats, two runs scored, two stolen bases and one RBI. Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) contributed with three hits (four at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. Catcher Samantha Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Absegami) collected two hits in four at bats, a double, one RBI and one run scored.
Rowan got on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the first inning. Veneziano led off with a single and later came home on a bunt single by Minch. Designated player Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) singled in left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) while Minch crossed the plate on an error. The Profs tacked on four more runs, one in the second inning and three in the third. Second baseman Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) doubled in Veneziano for the run in the second. Minch scored on an error in the third inning while Becker came home on a ground out. Right fielder Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) had a sacrifice fly that scored third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford).
Millikin’s two runs came in the bottom of the fourth. Right fielder Caitlin Reed walked with the bases loaded and Schafman scored. Pinch runner Jess Oller went home on a ground out by pinch hitter Rachel Bishop. Rowan tallied its last two runs in the fifth inning. Veneziano recorded a RBI single, scoring Leskanic. Roselle drove in Stevens with a single.
Right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was on the mound for the win over Utica. Minix (1-3) went six innings and did not give up a hit. She totaled seven strikeouts. Knorr threw the seventh inning. Stephanie Romanow pitched 4.1 innings for the loss.
The Profs got on the scoreboard with one run in the second inning. Becker had a double and stole third base. She scored on Steven’s sacrifice fly. Rowan was ahead 4-0 after three runs in the fifth. Minch walked with the bases loaded and right fielder Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) came home. Becker recorded a two RBI double, scoring Arcella and Veneziano.
Veneziano ended the game with two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Becker registered two doubles in two at bats, two RBIs and one run scored. The Pioneers’ lone run came in the top of the seventh. Catcher Mallory Ingalls reached base on an error. She advanced to second on a ground out and stole third. Ingalls crossed the plate on a ground out.
Rowan is off on Monday and continues its schedule at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday, March 15. The softball team faces Wis.-Platteville at 9 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. game against Springfield College (MA).
