Rowan Starts Rebel Games With Two Losses Against Nationally Ranked Teams

KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team started the Rebel Spring Games with two losses against nationally ranked teams on Saturday evening. Rowan lost to #14 Coast Guard Academy, 2-1 and #15 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College, 6-2.

Hayley Feindel pitched a complete game for Coast Guard. She scattered six hits and struck out 13 batters. Feindel had not given up a run in 55 straight innings before Rowan scored. Righty Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) took the loss. Singer (1-2) allowed five hits and the two runs were unearned. She totaled seven strikeouts.

For the Bears, shortstop Devin Fellman was two for four at the plate. Left fielder Megan Cooke contributed with a double (two at bats) and two RBIs. Third baseman Holli Bastinck had a double and second baseman Jamie Kim added a hit. Catcher Amanda Frederick and right fielder Stacia Sarwinski each scored one run.

Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) had two hits in four at bats for the Profs. Designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) registered one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) was one for three with one run scored. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) collected two hits in three trips to the plate.

All of the scoring came in the fifth inning. In the top half, Rowan had a RBI single by Landi and Veneziano scored the run. Frederick got on base because of an error to start the bottom of the inning. With one out, Sarwinski walk and she moved to second on a ground out while Frederick went to third. Cook drove in both runners with a double to center field.

CMS’ Amanda Banducci was the winning pitcher in the second game. She pitched five innings and gave up one earned run. Rebecca Gularte went the last two innings. She allowed one hit and one earned run. Right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) recorded eight strikeouts in the loss.

The Athenas had three players that had two hits apiece. Third baseman Harmony Palmer tallied two hits (a double and a triple) in four at bats, one RBI and two runs scored. Banducci posted two hits (four at bats), one double, one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Gizelle Pera was two for four with one run scored. First baseman Olivia Jacobs recorded two RBIs.

For Rowan, Roselle went two for three with two doubles and two RBIs. Right fielder Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) had two hits in three at bats and scored one run. First baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville), Davis and Veneziano each added one hit.

CMS went up 2-0 with one run in the second and fourth innings . Banducci led off the second with a double and later scored on a bunt single by Jacobs. In the fourth, Palmer recorded a triple and came home on a fielder’s choice. The Athenas had a 5-0 lead after scoring three runs in the fifth inning. Center fielder Megan Morris had a RBI double and scored on a double by Palmer. Banducci singled in Palmer.

Rowan scored one run in the bottom of the fifth. Roselle knocked in Arcella with a double. In the sixth, the Profs trailed 5-2 after a RBI double by Roselle. Pera scored Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ last run on an error in the seventh inning.

On Sunday, Rowan plays Millikin University (IL) and Utica College (NY) at 3 and 5 p.m. respectively at the Rebel Spring Games.
