Rowan Men Take Second and Women Finish Third at the NJAC Indoor Track Championships

NEW YORK, NY – The Rowan University men’s indoor track team took second place at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships and the women finished third. The Prof men totaled 129 points while the women registered 113. The conference championships were held at the Armory.

The NJAC champions for the men were Pierre James (so. Somerset, NJ/Franklin) in the shot put, Kyle Hayes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) in the long jump, the 4x200 meter relay and 4x400 meter relay. James had a winning throw of 52’ 0.75” (15.87 meters) that was a NCAA provisional (50’ 10.25”, 15.50 meters). Prior, he had a better NCAA provisional (52’ 1.75”, 15.89) at the CTC Championships (Feb. 12). Hayes leaped 22’ 7.25” (6.89 meters) for his second straight and third overall indoor conference title. He also finished seventh (40’ 8.25”, 12.40 meters) in the triple jump. The 4x200 meter relay won in 1:30.66 and the 4x400 meter relay had a time of 3:22.28. The 4x200 included Marcus Lee (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), Jayce Maxwell (jr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), Brandon Taylor (so. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) and Ali Ejaz (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro). The 4x400 consisted of Ejaz, Maxwell, Taylor Purdue (so. Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon Twp.) and Demetrius Rooks (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami).

The women were conference champions in the distance medley relay and Jamie Thompson (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) won the NJAC title in the 55 meter hurdles and the long jump. The distance medley relay had a winning time of 12:57.71 with Samantha Stapleton (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), Christina Huynh (so. Lake Hiawatha, NJ/Parsippany), Ashlee Petroski (fr. Verona, NJ/Verona) and Alli Catenacci (sr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.). Thompson ran the 55 meter hurdles in 8.40 which was a NCAA provisional (8.55). She also had a NCAA provisional of 8.40 at the CTC Championships (Feb. 12). Thompson jumped 17’ 0.25” (5.19 meters) in the long jump.

Rooks came in second (49.56) in the 400 meters. Will Smith (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) ran the one mile in 4:21.66 for second. Eric DuBois (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) had a second place in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:54.70. Mark Lisa (jr. Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon Twp.) finished second (22’ 6.25”, 6.87 meters) in the long jump and he was ninth (39’ 7.75”, 12.08 meters) in the triple jump. Mike Carotenuto (so. Port Monmouth, NJ/Middletown N.) had a third place (1:58.25) in the 800 meters. In the 55 meters, Taylor finished third (6.66) followed by Marcus Rawls (fr. North Brunswick, NJ/Florence Twp. Mem.) fourth (6.76).

The men’s distance medley took third (10:55.42) with Stephen Hoffman (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), Josh McGriff (so. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) , Tom Austin (so. Mantua, NJ/West Deptford) and Brian Quilty (sr. Brick, NJ/Saint Rose). The third place 4x800 meter relay (8:21.71) was made up of Smith, Carotenuto, Hoffman and Austin. Benjamin Bradley (sr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) was fourth (8.25) in the 55 meter hurdles. In the high jump, Joe Mineo (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Brian Makinson (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) finished fifth (6’2”, 1.88 meters) and sixth (6’, 1.83 meters) respectively. Quilty took sixth (9:18.06) in the 3000 meters.

In the shot put, Joe Carmichael (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) finished seventh (45’ 10”, 13.97 meters) followed by Frank Visconti (so. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) eighth (45’ 3”, 13.79 meters). John Grinnell (fr. Farmingdale, NJ/Howell) had a seventh place (43’ 9.25”, 13.34 meters) in the weight throw. McGriff came in seventh (23.49) in the 200 meters and Rawls was eighth (23.71). Purdue took seventh in the 400 meters (51.54) and Jeff Terebey (sr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) was ninth (16:35.31) in the 5000 meters.

The women produced third places in the 4x200 (1:45.40) and 4x800 (9:57.23) meter relays. The 4x200 consisted of Kayla Leahey (fr. Keansburg, NJ/Warwick Valley), Jacqui Nisbett (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury), Heidi DeGuzman (jr. Central Islip, NY/Pennsauken) and Amirah Muneer (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing). Grace Kaler (fr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills), Stapleton, Catenacci and Jena Peacock (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) were on the 4x800. The 4x400 meter relay came in fourth (4:13.49) with Leahey, Muneer, Nisbett and Tiffany Chamberlain (so. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.).

Peacock took second (5:05.65) in the one mile and fifth (2:22.72) in the 800 meters. Kaler came in third (19:32.52) in the 5000 meters followed by Joy Hanke (so. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) fourth (19:40.06). Hanke also took eighth (11:47.22) in the 3000 meters. Leahey had a height of 10’ 6” (3.20 meters) in the pole vault for third. Jessica Carlson (fr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) finished fourth in the triple jump (35’ 8”, 10.87 meters).

DeGuzman ran the 55 meters in 7.47 for third. She finished fourth (26.77) in the 200 meters while Leahey and Thompson were seventh (27.32) and eighth (27.38) respectively. In the high jump, Magan Kustera (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) took fifth (5’ 0.25”, 1.53 meters) and Samantha Kamper (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) tied for ninth (4’ 10.25”, 1.48 meters). The Profs had seventh places from Ashley White (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), 3000 meters (11:21.23); Chamberlain, 400 meters (59.90) and Catenacci, 800 meters (2:25.30). Jess Lomanaco (fr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) finished ninth (35’ 7.25”, 10.85 meters) in the shot put while Emily Spieker (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was ninth (37’ 8.75”, 11.50 meters) in the weight throw.

Rowan will compete again at the Armory Collegiate Championships on Friday, February 25 at 1 p.m.
