EWING, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team ended the season with a 62-55 loss at The College of New Jersey on Wednesday night.
The Lions will be the South Division’s third seed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament that starts on Saturday, February 19. TCNJ has a 14-10 record with a 7-6 conference mark. Rowan finishes 12-11 overall and 7-6 in the NJAC. The Lions received the third spot due the tie breaker rule, head-to-head competition.
Guard Keri Washington (sr. Ewing, NJ/Pennington Prep) led TCNJ with 15 points and seven rebounds. Guard Jessica Imhof (jr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) contributed with 12 points and five boards. Center Alex Gregorek (sr. Mahwah, NJ/Academy of Holy Angels) added 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. The Lions totaled 52 boards while the Profs had 39.
For the Profs, guard Gina Catanzariti (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored 17 points. She finished her career at the University with 1,017 points. Forward Lauren Gregg (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) totaled 13 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Forward Brittany Baum (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) collected 10 points and eight boards.
TCNJ started the second half with a 10 point lead (31-21). The Lions were ahead 37-27 at 15:09 and the Profs followed with a 7-0 run to pull within three points (37-34) at 12:56. Catanzariti made five of the seven points. Imhof had two free throws (8:36) and a jumper (8:11) for a nine point advantage (45-36). Baum’s foul shot at 6:26 cut the deficit to four (45-41). TCNJ led by nine points (52-43) at 3:47 after Gregorek had a basket.
The Profs pulled within four points (55-51) at 1:21 on a three-pointer by Gregg. With 33 seconds remaining, Washington made the second of two foul shots for a seven point margin (58-51). Gregg nailed a three (0:14) to trail by five (60-55). Guard Katie Occhipinti (jr. Warren, NJ/The Pingry School) had two free throws for the Lions (0:06) to end the game. In the second stanza, Washington totaled 11 points while Catanzariti and Gregg also had 11 points apiece.
In the first period, Catanzariti’s jumper at 12:57 gave the Profs a three point lead (8-5). The Lions went ahead, 9-8 (11:27) on a three-pointer by guard Stephanie Prall (sr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon). Rowan’s last lead was at 9:38 (14-13) after a layup by forward Erin Farrell (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). Gregorek made a layup (7:44) and Imhof added two foul shots (7:12) to go ahead 17-14. After a layup at 6:52 by Catanzariti, TCNJ pulled away with eight straight points to lead by nine (25-16). Washington ended the run with two free throws at 4:25. Catanzariti had a basket at 2:15 and the Profs were down by four points (25-21). The Lions answered with a 6-0 surge to end the half (31-21).
