GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team held on for a 68-65 win over Immaculata University in a nonconference game on Wednesday night.
With 3:26 left, the Mighty Macs took the lead 62-61 with a jumper by forward Kelly Brown (sr. Glen Mills, PA/Cardinal O’Hara). Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) put the Profs up 63-62 with a basket at 3:11. Guard Brianna Duffin (sr. Chadds Ford, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) followed with a layup (2:41) and forward Leah Kuczynski (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) added a foul shot (1:57) that put Immaculata ahead 65-63. Forward Lauren Creel’s (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) jump shot tied the game at 65 with 1:47 remaining. Rowan answered with a free throw (0:39) from forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and a layup (0:07) by Creel for the victory.
The Profs improve to 4-4 on the season while the Mighty Macs have a 5-3 record. The loss ended Immaculata’s five-game win streak. Gregg finished the game with 18 points and eight rebounds. Creel contributed with 16 points. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and Farrell added 13 and 12 points respectively. Farrell also grabbed six boards while Lamey dished five assists.
For the Mighty Macs, Brown totaled 13 points and nine rebounds. Guard Chrissy Esbensen (jr. Royersford, PA/St. Pius X) collected 12 points. Duffin pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. She also chipped in with nine points along with guard Bridget Welz (sr. Flourtown, PA/Gwynedd-Mercy Academy). Guard Sara Smith (fr. Glenolden, PA/Archbishop Prendergast) had eight points and six rebounds coming off the bench.
Rowan started the second half with a 10-point advantage (38-28). Creel’s basket at 17:11 made the score 42-30. Welz pulled Immaculata within seven points (44-37) after a layup and free throw at 16:02. The Profs were ahead by 13 points (54-41) on Farrell’s jumper and foul shot with 9:33 remaining. The Might Macs trailed by six points (58-52) after an 11-4 surge that ended at 6:51. Guards Alison Zimny (fr. Elkton, MD/St. Mark’s) and Katie Durkin (jr. Havertown, PA/Archbiship Prendergast) and Esbensen each nailed a three and Smith hit two free throws. Gregg’s two fouls shots at 6:43 put Rowan on top 61-52. Brown had back-to-back baskets, a three (5:45) and a jumper (5:12). Welz added a layup and foul shot at 4:38 to trail by one (61-60).
The score was tied two times in the first half before Rowan led the remainder of the period. Brown’s jumper knotted the score at six with 13:34 left. Gregg had a basket (13:13) that put the Profs ahead 8-6. At 12:14, Creel’s layup made the score 12-9. Her basket at the nine-minute mark increased the advantage to six points (19-13). The Might Macs pulled within three (21-18) at 7:06 on a free throw by Kuczynski. Rowan pulled away with 10 unanswered points for a 13 point lead (31-18) with 4:06 remaining. Gregg scored five of the 10 points. Immaculata pulled within five points (33-28) at 1:03 with a three-pointer by Esbensen. Lamey made a three (0:37) and guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (fr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) had a layup (0:05) to end the half (38-28).
Rowan is home again on Wednesday, December 7 against Eastern University at 7 p.m.
