GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team defeated visiting Neumann University, 89-66 in a nonconference game on Saturday night.
The Profs improve to 5-5 on the season while the Knights are 4-5 overall. Forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) contributed with 16 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) followed with 15 points and nine boards. Forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) chipped in with 11 points and guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) added 10. Banta collected seven rebounds and center Kate Matthews (fr. Clarks, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) pulled down six.
For Neumann, forward Sami Borcky (sr. Aston, PA/Sun Valley) totaled 13 points and seven rebounds. Guard Bethany Humenik (jr. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) scored 12 points followed by guard Erica Marvel (so. Oxford, PA/Oxford) with 11. Marvel also had five assists. Guard/forward Colleen Hinde (so. Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) and guard Cecily Scavicchio (sr. Boothwyn, PA/Boyertown) added seven and six points respectively.
The score was tied twice in the first half before Rowan took the lead for good. The last tie came at 16:28 when Creel’s jumper knotted the score at seven. The Profs built a 12-point lead (19-7) at 14:03. Gregg and Farrell each contributed with four points while Creel and Lamey had two apiece. The Profs were ahead by 16 (26-10) after a jump shot by Creel with 12:17 remaining. Humenik hit a three at 9:22 and the Knights trailed 30-17.
With 6:28 left, Creel had a basket for a 15-point advantage (34-19). Borcky cut the deficit to 12 (36-24) with a layup at 5:14. Farrell’s basket at 3:19 made the score 43-24. Creel had a layup with 1:56 left and Rowan was up by 17 points (46-29). Scavicchio nailed a three at the 43-second mark. Gregg ended the period with one foul shot (0:08) and the Profs were ahead 49-35. Creel totaled 16 first half points and Gregg registered 11.
In the second stanza, Creel’s jumper at 18:06 gave the Profs a 15-point lead (55-40). Forward Laura Scott (so. Ridley Park, NJ/Sun Valley) converted the first of two free throws (17:18) and Neumann trailed by 12 (55-43). Rowan stretched its advantage to 18 points (61-43) after baskets by Gregg (17:04), Creel (16:49) and Farrell (15:23). At 13:42, Borcky had a layup and Neumann was down 61-48. The Profs were ahead by 20 (68-48) at 11:38 after two straight baskets by Lamey and a three-point play by Banta.
Rowan led 68-52 with 10:50 on the clock. The Profs pulled away with 12 unanswered points for a 28-point advantage (80-52) at the seven-minute mark. It was the biggest lead of the game. Lamey and Creel each contributed with four points. Farrell and Matthews both added two points. Neumann followed with a 9-0 run (80-61) that ended with a layup by Borcky at 4:42. Banta’s layup put Rowan up by 24 points (87-63) with 1:36 left. Creel was the top scorer in the final half with 12 points.
