EWING, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team lost at The College of New Jersey, 69-55 in the conference opener on Wednesday night.
The Lions are 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Profs drop to 2-4 on the season. TCNJ had five players that scored in double figures. Guard/forward Hannah Tait (sr. Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) led the way with a game-high 15 points and five rebounds. Guard Jessica Imhof (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) contributed with 13 points and 10 boards.
Forward/center Liz West (so. Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Reg.), center/forward Candace Vigo (jr. New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick Health Science Tech) and guard Tiffany DeTulio (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) each chipped in with 10 points. West also grabbed eight rebounds while DeTulio and Vigo each had five. Guard Katie Occhipinti (sr. Warren, NJ/The Pingry School) dished eight assists.
For Rowan, guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) scored a career-high 13 points. Forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) totaled 11 points and six rebounds. Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) added seven points and nine rebounds. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) recorded 11 assists.
In the first half, DeTulio’s three-pointer gave TCNJ the lead (6-5) at 17:21. The Lions had a nine-point advantage (16-7) after three straight baskets by West (15:35), Tait (14:59) and Imhof (14:28). Rowan answered with a 9-0 run that tied the score at 16 (10:52). Creel made five points while Banta and Lamey had two apiece. The score was tied at 18 with 9:13 remaining. The Profs had their first lead (20-18) at 7:39 after two free throws by Banta. Vigo’s layup knotted the score at 20 (5:34).
The Lions were ahead 24-20 at 4:37. Center Stephanie Krauss (jr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) made a layup (4:17) and a jumper (3:32) for the fifth tie of the game. Imhof nailed a three to go up 27-24 with 3:16 left. Rowan pulled within one (27-26) after guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (fr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) had a basket at 2:35. TCNJ followed with a three-pointer (2:23) by guard Kelly Roddy (so. Belmar, NJ/St Rose). Schullstrom added a foul shot at the one-minute mark and the Profs trailed 30-27 at the break. Tait paced the Lions with 11 points and eight rebounds.
TCNJ was ahead by 10 points (38-28) at 15:38 in the second period after Tait made a three-pointer (16:32) and a layup (15:38). At 13:51, Schullstrom’s jumper made the score 40-35. The Lions had an 8-0 surge for a 13-point (48-35) advantage at 11:27. Vigo contributed with four of the eight points. Vigo’s layup at 4:09 stretched the lead to 19 (64-45). With 1:49 on the clock, Imhof hit two free throws and TCNJ was up 68-50. Tait was the scoring leader in the second half with 13 points.
