READING, PA – The Alvernia University women’s basketball team had a 69-59 win over Rowan University in a nonconference game on Monday night.
The Crusaders improve to 3-1 on the season. The Profs have a 2-3 record. Alvernia had five players score in double figures. Guards Kaitlyn Yoh (fr. Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) and CeCe Buzzard (sr. Willow Street, PA/Solanco) and forward Allie Toczylowski (sr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) each tallied 12 points. Buzzard also grabbed eight rebounds, while Toczylowski had eight boards and four steals. Guard Kelli McIntyre (sr. Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) registered 11 points and center Angela Altemose (sr. Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM) had 10. Altemose pulled down eight rebounds.
For Rowan, forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) compiled 14 points and nine rebounds. Forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) posted 12 points. Center Kate Matthews (fr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) both scored 11 points. Matthews added six rebounds. Lamey collected six boards and six assists.
The Profs were ahead, 32-28 after the first period. Creel’s basket at 19:21 in the second made the score, 36-30. The Crusaders went on a 16-2 run to go up, 46-38 with 13:24 remaining. Toczylowski tallied six points, Buzzard added five, Altemose had four and forward Kelsey Gill (so. State College, PA/State College Area) chipped in with a free throw. Back-to-back baskets by Lamey (13:09) and Matthews (12:43) cut the deficit to four (46-42). Creel nailed a jumper at 9:27 to bring Rowan within two (49-47). Altemose sunk two foul shots (9:00), Yoh made a jumper (7:52) and Buzzard made two free throws (5:10) to extend the lead to eight (55-47).
Lamey connected on one of two foul shots at 4:48. Alvernia recorded the next seven points to pull away, 62-48. Guard Mya Lobb’s (fr. Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) two foul shots (1:20) ended the surge. Gregg nailed a three-pointer at 1:10 and Rowan trailed by 11 (62-51). Altemose sunk two free throws at the 58 second mark. Matthews had a basket (:49) and forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (fr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) hit a three-pointer (:42) to come within eight (64-56). Buzzard hit one foul shot (:36) and Yoh had two (:25). Lamey’s three-pointer with 16 seconds left cut the deficit to eight (67-59). Gill converted two free throws with four seconds on the clock to end the scoring. Toczylowski and Altemose compiled 10 points apiece in the second period, while Lamey had nine for Rowan.
In the first half, the Profs had an 11-10 advantage following a jumper by Gregg at 15:26. Alvernia forward Chelsea Gieringer (so. Oley, PA/Oley Valley) hit a jump shot (14:41) and McIntyre made a three-pointer (13:25) to put the Crusaders up, 15-11. Rowan had three straight layups by Gregg (13:10), Creel (12:22) and Matthews (12:00) to take a 17-15 lead. Lobb tied the game (17-17) with a jumper at 11:43. Matthews registered a layup (10:47) and Gregg hit a three-pointer (10:03) to go ahead by five (22-17).
Toczylowski followed with a jump shot (9:38) and Creel had a basket (9:03). Alvernia scored nine consecutive points for a 28-24 advantage with 5:42 remaining. Yoh collected five of the nine points. Rowan closed out the period with an 8-0 run. Center Stephanie Krauss (jr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.), Schullstrom, Gregg and Matthews each had two points. McIntryre led all first half scorers with 11 points. Gregg collected nine points for the Profs, while Creel had eight.
