GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team lost at home to nonconference opponent Delaware Valley College, 75-62 on Tuesday night.
The Aggies are undefeated with a 4-0 record while the Profs are 2-2 on the season. Forward Emily Soper (jr. Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds. Guards Sarah Innerst (so. Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) and Brittany Battinieri (sr. Brookhaven, PA/Ridley) contributed with 15 and 14 points respectively. Forward Brenna Coll (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Springside) totaled 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Forward Shannon Barlow (fr. Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) grabbed 11 boards and added six points.
Rowan was led by forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) with 21 points. She tied her career high against Dickinson College (Nov. 20). Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) collected 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) totaled seven points and six assists.
At 18:14 in the first half, the score was tied at four. Creel made two straight baskets at 18:06 and 17:34. Soper answered with a layup (16:08) and a jumper (15:17) for the third tie of the game (8-8). Center Kate Matthew’s (fr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) jumper at 15:03 put Rowan up 10-8. Soper hit two baskets (14:48 and 14:31) to give the Aggies the lead (12-10). Coll’s three-pointer at 12:43 made the score 16-14. Creel had a layup that tied the score at 16 with 12:27 remaining. Guard Grace Mirack (fr. Jamison, PA/Archbishop Wood) nailed a three at 12:03 (19-16). Center Stephanie Krauss (jr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) pulled the Profs within one (19-18) with a layup at 11:21.
Delaware Valley built a 12 point advantage (32-20) with a 13-2 run that ended at 4:58. Battinieri led the way with five points. Creel followed with two foul shots (4:29) and forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had a layup (3:46) to cut the deficit to eight (32-24). Guard Ashley Waring (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) made a layup (2:28) and Rowan was still down by eight points (34-26). Battinieri produced a three-pointer (1:11) while Gregg hit a jumper (0:52) to end the period with the Aggies ahead 37-28. Soper and Battinieri each finished with 10 points.
In the second half, Creel made a basket (18:14) and the Profs trailed by five points (37-32). Gregg’s jumper cut the deficit to three (39-36) at 16:06. Delaware Valley scored six straight points to lead by nine (45-36) with 13:54 left. Mirack tallied four points and Soper added two free throws. At 13:19, Gregg made a layup to trail by five (45-40).
Innerst hit a three-pointer to lead by 10 (52-42) at 12:01. The Aggies’ biggest lead was 14 points (56-42) after a jumper by Barlow at 10:54. They also were ahead by 14 four more times with the last one at 6:56 (64-50). Rowan came within eight points (66-58) after two free throws by Farrell with 4:19 remaining. Innerst followed with a layup (3:08) and Coll added two foul shots (2:43) for a 12 point advantage (70-58). Guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) shot two free throws (1:18) and the Profs trailed 70-62. Delaware Valley sealed the win with five of six shots at the line in the last 1:08.
After Thanksgiving, Rowan travels to Alvernia University on Monday, November 28 for a 7 p.m. game.
