WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team lost at New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent William Paterson University, 87-59 on Saturday.

The Pioneers have a 12-2 overall record with a 3-1 NJAC mark. This week, William Paterson is ranked 24th in the USA Today/ESPN/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. The Profs drop to 6-7 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

Forward April Smith (jr. Barnegat, NJ/Southern Reg.) led William Paterson with a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds. Guard BriAnna Lucas (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) contributed with 22 points and dished 10 assists. Forward Jewell Palmer (fr. Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) chipped in with 10 rebounds. Guards Kristine Jackiewicz (fr. Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) and Floriana Borova (fr. Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) each added eight points. Forward Tatiana Javis (so. Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) grabbed seven boards and had eight points. Guard Lindsey Callander (so. Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) totaled seven assists.

For Rowan, forward Lauren Gregg (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) scored 12 points. Guard Alissa Lamey (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) collected nine points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals. Forward Brittany Baum (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and guard Gina Catanzariti (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) registered eight points and seven rebounds apiece.

The score was tied three times in the first half. Baum’s three-pointer knotted the score at 13 with 13:08 remaining which was the last one. Smith followed with a layup (12:47) that put the Pioneers ahead 15-13. The Profs had a one-point lead (16-15) after a three (12:12) by Gregg. The two teams exchanged baskets, Javis at 11:55 and guard Bria Hill (fr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) at 10:16. William Paterson pulled away with an 18-3 run that ended at 6:49 and a 14 point lead (35-21). Lucas led the way with eight points while Jackiewiewic and Javis had six and four points respectively. Rowan trailed by 13 points (38-25) at 4:10. The Pioneers ended the period with a 13-2 surge for a 24 point advantage (51-27). Smith scored 18 first half points and Lucas finished with 12.

In the second stanza, Lucas’ three put the Pioneers ahead by 29 points (56-27) at 17:05. Baum had a layup at 14:19 and the Profs were down by 21 points (59-38). William Paterson increased the lead to 32 points (71-39) at 9:46 after a 12-1 surge. Smith scored eight of the 12 points. Borova’s three-pointer at the six minute mark made the score 78-47. Lucas was the second half scoring leader with 10 points.

Rowan’s game on Monday, January 10 at Marymount University has been cancelled. The women’s basketball team will play at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, January 12 at 6 p.m.
