Rowan Tops Rutgers-Newark, 74-53 For Fifth Straight Victory

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team had a 74-53 victory over visiting Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Profs are 11-7 overall and 6-2 in the conference. Rowan has won five straight contests. The Scarlet Raiders have a 14-6 record with a 4-5 NJAC mark. Forward Lauren Gregg (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) led the way with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Forward Brittany Baum (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) added 15 points. Guard Lauren Creel (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) compiled 12 points and five assists. Guard Alissa Lamey (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) totaled six points, eight assists and three steals.

For Rutgers-Newark, forward Jaleesa Coleman (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) tallied 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Guard Courtney Woodard (fr. Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) scored eight points off the bench. Guard Jared Tactuk (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) chipped in with seven points, while guard Brittany Smith (jr. Salem, NJ/Salem) dished five assists.

The Scarlet Raiders started the game with a 10-4 surge over the first 3:47. Tactuk and Coleman each hit a three-pointer. Rowan pulled within two (10-8) after baskets by Gregg (16:02) and Creel (15:11). Forward Anthonia Ajumobi (fr. Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic) had a layup at 14:12 to make the score, 13-9. The Profs scored the next nine points to take an 18-15 advantage at 11:50. Gregg had six points, while Lamey made a three-pointer.

Coleman’s layup at 9:34 cut the deficit to one (20-19). Rowan went on a 9-0 run to stretch the lead to 10 (29-19) with 5:37 on the clock. Creel scored four points, Baum nailed a three-pointer and Gregg had a jumper. Guard Bria Hill’s (fr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) basket with 1:46 left gave Rowan a 14 point advantage (38-24). Coleman hit a jumper with 1:25 remaining to make the score, 38-26 at the intermission.

Profs’ guard Gina Catanzariti (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) recorded a layup at 18:09 in the second period and the score was 42-30. The Scarlet Raiders compiled seven straight points to cut the deficit to five (42-37) at 15:03. Coleman registered five of the seven points. Baum made a basket (14:08) and Coleman followed with a three-pointer (13:48) for a six point game (46-40). It was the closest Rutgers-Newark came the rest of the way. Rowan pulled away with a 17-1 surge that ended at 4:56. The 22 points (63-41) marked the largest lead of the contest. Baum scored six of the 17 points. Scarlet Raiders’ guard Samantha Grippo (jr. Edison, NJ/Edison) hit a three-pointer with 37 seconds remaining. Rowan guard Christine Gannon (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) nailed a three-pointer with one second left for a 21 point victory (74-53).

Rowan travels to Kean University on Saturday, February 5 at 1 p.m.
