GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark men’s basketball team had an 85-74 win over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 15-5 overall and 5-4 in the conference. The Profs have a 7-11 record with a 2-6 NJAC mark. Rutgers-Newark was led by guard Pedro Burgos (jr. Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee) with 37 points and eight rebounds. He made nine of 13 three-point attempts. Guard Al’Don Muhammad (so. Irvington, NJ/Queen of Peace) registered 13 points, seven assists and six boards. Forward Hussein Abdelmaksoud (so. West New York, NJ/Memorial) contributed with 10 points and seven rebounds.
For Rowan, guards Jason Rosenberg (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Roger Loatman (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) each scored 15 points. It was a season-high for Rosenberg. Loatman also totaled nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Guard Akeem Johnson (jr. Gouldtown, NJ/Bridgeton) compiled 13 points off the bench. Guards Sean Hughes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) and Kendall White (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Rutgers-Newark was ahead, 46-40 at halftime. Burgos’ three-pointer at 18:58 extended the lead to seven (49-42). Rowan guard Laud Anderson (sr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Twp.) hit a jumper at 14:38 to come within four (55-51). The Scarlet Raiders had the next eight points for a 12 point advantage (63-51). Burgos had six of the eight points. Loatman’s layup at 11:36 made the score, 66-56. Rutgers-Newark followed with a 7-0 run to go up, 73-56. Burgos tallied five points and forward Noah McCoy (so. Newark, NJ/St. Anthony’s) had two.
At 6:06, Abdelmaksoud had a basket, giving the Scarlet Raiders an 18 point lead (79-61). The Profs answered with a 9-0 surge to cut the deficit to nine (79-70) at 3:40. Johnson collected five points, while Rosenberg and Loatman each had two. Johnson converted three free throws at 1:47 to make the score, 82-73. Rutgers-Newark hit three foul shots down the stretch to seal the win.
Rosenberg’s layup at 18:09 in the first period tied the game at five. Burgos nailed a jumper (18:00) and a three-pointer (16:45) for a five point advantage (10-5). Forward Mark Moorman (so. Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) recorded a layup at 14:22 to make the score, 16-10. Rowan went on a 12-0 run to pull ahead by six (22-16) at 11:17. Loatman and Rosenberg posted five points apiece and White had two. Three straight baskets by Abdelmaksoud (10:40), Muhammad (9:30) and Burgos (8:44) tied the game (22-22).
The game was knotted at 25 with 7:39 on the clock. Loatman’s layup at 6:41 put Rowan up by one (28-27). Rutgers-Newark had a 9-1 run to pull ahead by seven (36-29). Muhammad scored six of the nine points. Johnson’s layup with 2:13 remaining brought the Profs within two (38-36). With 55 seconds left, Burgos hit a jumper, but Rosenberg followed with two foul shots (:41) to make the score, 43-40. Burgos made a three-pointer at the 13 second mark to give the Scarlet Raiders a 46-40 lead at the intermission.
Rowan travels to Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday, February 1 at 6 p.m.
