Rowan Defeats Conference Opponent New Jersey City, 78-43

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team defeated New Jersey City University, 78-43 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Profs are 10-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference. Rowan has won four straight conference games. NJCU drops to 3-14 on the season and 0-7 in the NJAC. 

Guard Lauren Creel (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) led Rowan with a career-high 15 points. Guard Gina Catanzariti (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Alissa Lamey (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) chipped in with 11 points and dished eight assists. Forwards Brittany Baum (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and Lauren Gregg (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) added nine and eight points respectively. Gregg also grabbed 10 boards and Baum registered eight.

For NJCU, guard Carolina Garcia (sr. Plainfield, NJ/Franklin) scored 15 points. Forward Maxine Kaminski (so. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) and guard Nidia Carmona (so. Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) contributed with eight points apiece. Forward Delia Chernez (so. Union City, NJ/Union City) pulled down seven rebounds.

Rowan started the game with a 9-0 run in the first 2:08. Creel contributed with four points, Gregg followed with three and Catanzariti had two. NJCU had a three-pointer by Carmona at 17:34 that made the score 9-3. The Profs pulled away with a 13-0 run to lead by 19 points (22-3) at 12:48. Creel totaled six of the 13 points. After guard Gabrielle Rivera’s (so. Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) two foul shots at 11:02, the Gothic Knights trailed by 15 points (22-7). Creel hit two free throws at 10:08 that put Rowan back up by 19 (26-7). With 2:58 remaining, Baum had a foul shot that stretched the advantage to 24 points (36-12). The Profs were ahead 40-16 at the break. Creel ended the period with 12 points.

In the second stanza, Kaminski hit a three at 18:51 that made the score 43-19. Rowan followed with an 11-0 spurt to go ahead by 35 points (54-19) at 14:27. Garcia had two free throws at 8:39 and the Gothic Knights trailed 63-27. The Profs followed with a 9-1 run to lead by 44 points (72-28) with 5:27 remaining. It was their largest margin of the game. Guard Bria Hill (fr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) contributed with five points while forward Julie Genther (fr. Mantua, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Catanzariti each added two.

Rowan is home again on Wednesday, January 26 against The College of New Jersey at 6 p.m.
