JERSEY CITY, NJ – The New Jersey City University men’s soccer team edged visiting Rowan University, 2-1 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
At 59:18, midfielder Gabriel Avans (so. Roselle Park, NJ/Roselle Catholic) scored the game-winner when he knocked in a rebound. Forward J.P. Rosero (so. Jersey City, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) picked up an assist. The Gothic Knights improve to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
New Jersey City got on the scoreboard first at 10:32 with a goal by forward Nana Kofi Kusi (so. Jersey City, NJ/Jumasi Academy (Ghana)) and midfielder Oluwole Seydou (jr. Willingboro, NJ/Burlington County Institute of Technology) assisted. Rowan tied the score at 11:47 when back Jon Hampton (so.Galloway, NJ/Absegami) registered a goal. Forward Julian Berrios (so. Lakewood, NJ/Calvary Academy) picked up the assist.
Rowan drops to 3-5-2 on the season with a 0-3 NJAC mark. The Gothic Knights took 15 shots and the Profs totaled 12. In the Rowan goal, Charlie Cunliffe (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) made seven saves. For NJCU, goalie Zakary Azmi (fr. New Milford, NJ/Emerson) had three saves.
Rowan travels to Richard Stockton College on Wednesday, September 29 for an 8 p.m. conference game.
