JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at New Jersey City University on Tuesday. Rowan won the first game, 8-0 in six innings and took the second contest, 6-0.
Rowan improves to 15-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference. New Jersey City has an 8-8 overall record and a 0-4 NJAC mark. In the first game, right-hander Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) tossed six innings for the win (8-3). She allowed two hits and struck out five hitters. Righty Ashley O’Beirne (fr. Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) gave up seven earned runs in six innings for the loss (5-4).
Profs’ center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) went three for four with three RBIs, two runs scored, two home runs and a double. Designated player Jamie Parks (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was two for two with three RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) added one hit (three at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a home run. Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.), shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) all scored one run. Catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) contributed with one RBI.
For the Gothic Knights, second baseman Danielle Delfino (jr. Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) and center fielder Stephanie Gomez (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/Belleville) both recorded one hit.
Rowan scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Smith reached base on a single and later scored on a ground out with Taraschi at the plate. Parks hit a three run homer, scoring Leskanic and Minch. In the second, Veneziano blasted a two run home run. The Profs tacked on one run in the fourth and sixth innings. Veneziano hit a solo homer in the fourth and Roselle led off the sixth with a solo shot of her own.
In the nightcap, left-hander Michelle Black (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) pitched six innings for the victory (5-3). She scattered four hits and struck out two batters. Righty Erika Knorr (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) tossed a scoreless seventh inning. Right-hander Tara Perrucci (sr. East Rutherford, NJ/Wallington) went six innings, giving up six runs for the loss (3-4).
Veneziano was three for three at the plate with two runs scored and a triple. Smith went two for three with two runs scored and two RBIs. Parks compiled two hits (four at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Leskanic totaled two hits (four at bats), one RBI and a double. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (sr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) posted one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Pinch hitter Katie Madden (fr. Blackwood, NJ/Camden Catholic) scored once.
NJCU catcher Taylor Lang (jr. Carteret, NJ/Carteret) registered two hits (three at bats). Shortstop Megan Ginter (so. Nutley, NJ/Nutley), third baseman Rebecca Satz (fr. Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) and Delfino all produced one hit in three trips to the plate.
The Profs got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. Parks led off with a double down the left field line. She came home on a single by DiDonato. In the third, Veneziano tripled to right center field and crossed the plate on a single by Smith. Leskanic’s single through the left side knocked in Smith. Rowan added one run the fourth. Smith singled up the middle driving in Madden. In the bottom of the sixth, Parks hit a single through the left side with the bases loaded, scoring Smith and Veneziano.
