NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept Rutgers-Newark, 12-0 (five innings) and 7-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader on Saturday.

The Profs have a 25-8 overall record with an 11-3 conference mark. The Scarlet Raiders are 11-23 overall and 1-13 in the NJAC.

In the first game, right-hander Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) only gave up one hit in five innings. Minix (15-3) totaled nine strikeouts. It was her eighth shutout on the season. Pitcher Angela Riscinti (fr. Linden, NJ/Linden) took the loss.

Designated player Jamie Parks (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was two for three with two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) contributed with two hits (two at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) added one hit (two at bats), three runs scored, one RBI and a home run. Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) chipped in with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) registered one hit (three at bats), one RBI and two runs scored.

Rowan jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Taraschi singled in Veneziano for the first run. Minch had a RBI double and Parks followed with a RBI single. Minch crossed the plate on a dropped fly ball and Parks came home on an error. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and first baseman Stephanie Labas (fr. Millville, NJ/Millville) scored on an error and a passed ball respectively. Smith knocked in a run with a single.

The Profs were ahead 11-0 after two runs in the second inning and one in the third. In the second, Parks plated Taraschi with a single and Labas’ sacrifice fly scored Minch. Veneziano went home on an error in the third. The game ended in the fifth inning because of the eighth run rule. Rowan’s last run in the fifth was a solo homer by Veneziano.

Lefty Michelle Black (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) had the win on the mound in the second contest. Black (7-4) pitched four innings and only allowed one hit. Right-hander Erika Knorr (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) went the last three innings. Samantha Veneziano (fr. North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) was the losing pitcher.

Smith totaled two hits in three at bats and two RBIs. Veneziano was two for three with two runs scored and a triple. Minch tallied two hits (three at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a double. Labas compiled three hits (three at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a double. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (sr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had one double and one RBI while Taraschi recorded a homer.

The Profs got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the first. Veneziano scored on a sacrifice fly by DiDonato. Rowan had a 3-0 lead after the fourth inning. Labas crossed the plate on Smith’s sacrifice fly and left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) stole home. In the fifth, Labas drove in Minch with a single. The Profs had three runs in the sixth. Veneziano led off with a triple and came home on a ground out. Taraschi recorded a solo shot to left center field. Minch’s double down the right field line scored designated player Ashley Landi (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland).

Next week, Rowan hosts The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, April 27 at 3 p.m. It is the last home doubleheader of the regular season.
