Rowan Shuts Out Swarthmore, 5-0 and 2-0

SWARTHMORE, PA – The Rowan University softball team shut out Swarthmore College, 5-0 and 2-0 (six innings) in nonconference action on Thursday.

The Profs, ranked 20th in the nation, have a 23-8 record. The Garnet drop to 18-20 on the season. Right-hander Erika Knorr (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) was the winning pitcher in the first game. Knorr (3-1) only allowed three hits in five innings of relief. Isabel Sanchez (fr. Cicero, IL/Fenwick) took the loss on the mound. In five innings, Sanchez (4-8) gave up eight hits and five earned runs.

Rowan third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) recorded a home run, three RBIs and one run scored. Designated player Jamie Parks (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was two for fourth with one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) chipped in with two hits (four at bats), one run scored and a double. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (sr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) contributed with one hit (four at bats) and one RBI.

For Swarthmore, right fielder Michele Perch (sr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) and catcher Danielle Seltzer (fr. West Orange, NJ/Newark Academy) each registered two hits in four at bats. Designated player Kathryn Riley (sr. Dagsboro, DE/Indian River), first baseman Krista Scheirer (jr. Norristown, PA/Germantown Academy) and Sanchez added one hit apiece.

Rowan went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. DiDonato drove in center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) with a single for the first run. Veneziano got on base with a single. Park’s single plated catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon).

The Profs added three runs in the sixth. Minch led off with a double to center field and Parks followed with a single. Leskanic’s home run drove in Minch and Parks. It was Leskanic’s second homer on the season.

Right-hander Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) pitched a five inning no-hitter in the nightcap. The second game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning because of rain. Minix (14-3) struck out three batters. The losing pitcher was Riley who gave up six hits and two earned runs in six innings.

Veneziano contributed with one hit (three at bats) and two RBIs. Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) and Leskanic both were one for two at the plate with one run scored. Left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta), Taraschi and Parks each collected one hit.
The Profs scored both of their runs in the fifth inning. Smith reached first with a single up the middle. Leskanic followed with a single. With one out, Veneziano plated Smith and Leskanic with a single.

Next, Rowan travels to conference opponent Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, April 24 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
