POMONA, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split conference games at Richard Stockton College on Tuesday. The Profs had a 2-0 shutout in the first game and the Ospreys came back to win the second, 4-3.
Rowan has a 21-8 record with a 9-3 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Richard Stockton is 19-9 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
In the opener, right-hander Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) pitched seven innings for the win. She (13-3) scattered six hits and struck out five batters. It was the first loss of the season for pitcher Jamie Gasko (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson). Gasko (7-1) gave up four hits and two earned runs. She had three strikeouts.
Shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) led the Profs with two hits in three at bats, two RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Designated player Jamie Parks (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was one for two.
For the Ospreys, third baseman Danielle Accardi (so. East Brunswick, NJ/Mount St. Mary) was three for three at the plate. Catcher Brooke Shetter (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) had two hits, one triple, in three at bats. Gasko added one hit (one at bat).
Rowan’s two runs came in the top of the fourth inning. Taraschi led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Parks. Minch recorded a two-run homer. It was her second of the year.
In the second contest, Shetter doubled in the winning run in the top of the seventh inning. She drove in second baseman Taryn Lynch (sr. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown). Lynch had reached base with a single.
Osprey shortstop Joey Afflitto (so. Brick, NJ/Brick) contributed with a triple and two RBIs. Lynch finished the game with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Left fielder Laura Dubell (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Picataway) was one for three with one run scored. First baseman Kelly Dodd (sr. Linwood, NJ/Linwood) had one hit while center fielder Katelyn Derewecki (so. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) scored one run.
Pitcher Kaitlyn Corica (sr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) earned the win in relief. She (5-5) went 2.1 innings and only allowed one hit. Right-hander Erika Knorr (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) had the loss on the mound. In 6.1 innings, Knorr (2-1) gave up six hits and four earned runs.
For the Profs, third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) was three for three at the plate with one run scored. Parks had one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) recorded a triple and two RBIs. Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.), Taraschi and Minch each tallied a double. Designated player Ashley Landi (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and Minch scored one run apiece.
Stockton had a 3-0 lead after the second inning. Lynch knocked in Derewecki with a single. Afflitto recorded a two RBI triple that brought home Dubell and Lynch. Rowan tied the game in the fourth. Minch doubled and went to third on a wild pitch. Parks plated Minch with a single. Roselle tripled in two runs, Leskanic and Landi scored.
Rowan travels to nonconference Swarthmore College on Thursday, April 22 for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
