GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader over Rutgers-Camden on Sunday. The Profs won the first game 8-0 in six innings and took the second contest 8-0 in five innings.
Rowan improves to 20-7 overall and 8-2 in the conference. Rutgers-Camden has a 16-9 overall record and a 5-5 NJAC mark. In the first game, right-hander Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw a no-hitter. She only allowed one base runner. Righty Ashley Jimenez (sr. Bellmawr, NJ/Triton Reg.) tossed 5.2 innings, allowing eight unearned runs for the loss.
Profs’ right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) went three for three with two doubles and two runs scored. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) registered two hits (four at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (sr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) posted a double and one RBI. Left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) contributed with one hit (three at bats), a triple, two RBIs and one run scored.
Smith doubled and scored on DiDonato’s single down the right field line in the first inning. Rowan added one run in the third. Veneziano got on base with a single and DiDonato drove her in with a single down the left field line.
The Profs tacked on six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) led off with a walk and later scored on an error. Roselle’s triple knocked in shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and pinch hitter Jamie Parks (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.). Veneziano followed with a RBI single that plated Roselle. Smith doubled, moving Veneziano to third. DiDonato had a ground out and Veneziano came home. Taraschi drove in Smith with a double to left center field.
In the nightcap, Minix pitched four scoreless innings. She (12-3) only allowed one hit. Right-hander Erika Knorr (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) threw the last inning without surrendering a hit. Jimenez (9-6) took the loss for the Scarlet Raptors. She went four innings and gave up six earned runs.
Taraschi totaled two hits (three at bats), four RBIs, two runs scored and a grand slam. Smith compiled one hit (four at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. DiDonato went one for four with one RBI and one run scored. Parks drove in one run, while pinch runner Dani Klemt (fr. Rivervale, NJ/Pascack Valley), Veneziano and Roselle all scored once.
The Profs scored two runs in the top of the third inning. Parks ripped a RBI single through the left side that plated Smith and Taraschi came home on an error. In the fifth, Smith reached base on an error and Klemt scored. DiDonato knocked in Roselle with a single up the middle. Taraschi blasted a grand slam to end the scoring.
Rowan travels to Richard Stockton College for a NJAC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 20 at 3 p.m. Rutgers-Camden hosts The College of New Jersey on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
