Rowan Splits Two More Games on Opening Weekend

SALISBURY, MD – The Rowan University softball team split two more games on Sunday. Rowan defeated Frostburg State University, 4-1 and lost to host Salisbury University, 8-5.

Right-hander Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was the winning pitcher against Frostburg. Minix (1-1) threw five innings and scattered four hits. She totaled six strikeouts. Righty Erika Knorr (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) went the final two innings for the save.

Shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) was two for three at the plate with a double and a home run. She registered two RBIs and one run scored. Designated player Ashley Landi (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) had two hits in two at bats, two RBIs and one run scored. Landi recorded a double and a home run. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) each chipped in with one hit.

For Frostburg (1-2), catcher Lauren Scrivener was one for three with one RBI. Center fielder Lindsay Freitag and right fielder Brooke Tapman each had one hit (three at bats). Left-hander Megan Henne took the loss (0-2). She pitched a complete game and gave up six hits and four earned runs.

The Profs had a 2-0 lead after scoring one run in the first and fourth innings. With two outs, Landi recorded a solo home run in the first. Minch had a RBI double in the second inning that brought home pinch runner Dani Klemt (fr. Rivervale, NJ/Pascack Valley).

In the fifth, Roselle reached base with a double and came home on a double by Landi with two outs. Frostburg’s lone run came in the bottom half. Scrivener singled in third baseman Jenna Delaney. Minch recorded a homer in the sixth for the final run.

Against Salisbury, Landi had two hits in four at bats, two RBIs and a double. Roselle was one for three with two RBIs and a double. Pinch hitter Jamie Parks (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) plated one run with a double. Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) scored two runs and added one hit (two at bats). Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) contributed with one hit and one run scored.

For the Sea Gulls (7-2), designated player Brittany Lounge and catcher Lauren Brenneman each registerd three hits. Lounge also had three runs scored, one RBI and a double. Brenneman totaled two RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. First baseman Ali Ritter added two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and a double. Right fielder Michelle Gravhadl was two for four with a double and one RBI.

Pitcher Erika Brittingham picked up her third win of the season. In four innings, she only allowed two hits and struck out five batters. Kelsey Mills pitched the final three innings. Lefty Michelle Black (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) took the loss.

Salisbury jumped out to a 5-0 advantage after scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and three in the second. The Sea Gulls added a run in the fourth and the Profs got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom half. Parks’ double to left field brought home pinch runner Lauren Davis (so. Ewing, NJ/Ewing).

Both teams scored two runs in the fifth and Salisbury was ahead 8-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Veneziano and Smith scored on a double to left center field by Landi. Rowan added two more runs in the sixth. Roselle drove in two runs with a double to right field.

The Profs are 2-2 on the season after playing four games at Salisbury. Rowan was scheduled to open at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast Tournament but it was cancelled due to field conditions.

Rowan heads to Kissimmee, FL for spring break and the softball team will play 10 games. The Profs start the trip with games against Trine University (IN) and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at 1 and 5 p.m. respectively on Saturday, March 13.
