GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader over Haverford College, 8-3 and 6-0 on Thursday.
Rowan improves to 12-5, while Haverford has a 6-6 record. The Profs have won their last five games. In the first contest, right hander Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) pitched a complete game for the win. Minix (6-3) only allowed one earned run and struck out seven hitters. Righty Cassandra Searls (sr. Green Brook, NJ/Mount Saint Mary Academy) allowed six runs in four innings for the loss.
Left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) paced the Profs with three hits (three at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a triple. Catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) went three for four with four RBIs, one run scored, a double and a home run. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) was two for four with two runs scored, one double and one triple. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) scored two runs and drove in another. Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) added one hit (four at bats) and one run scored.
For the Fords, Searls compiled three hits (three at bats), one run scored and a double. Catcher Laura Iwanyk (so. Howell, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) went two for three with one RBI. Shortstop Candice Smith (jr. Middlesex, NJ/Rutgers Prep) and center fielder Alison Crawford (jr. Yardley, PA/George School) each crossed the plate once.
Rowan took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and one in the second. Taraschi recorded a two run single in the first that brought Smith and Veneziano home. In the second, Roselle’s RBI single knocked in Leskanic, who led off with a triple to right center field. Haverford cut the deficit to two (3-1) with one run in the top of the third when Smith scored on an error.
The Profs added three runs in the fourth inning. Leskanic doubled to right center field and Roselle followed with a triple that plated Leskanic. Veneziano’s suicide squeeze brought Roselle home and Veneziano came in on a wild pitch. The Ford got two runs in the top of the fifth. Searls scored on an error and Iwanyk singled in Crawford. Taraschi hit a two run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
In the nightcap, left hander Michelle Black (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) tossed six scoreless innings to improve to 4-2. She scattered three hits and registered four strikeouts. Righty Erika Knorr (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) pitched the final inning, striking out two batters. Right hander Lisa Karmel (jr. Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) gave up four earned runs in six innings for the loss. She had six strikeouts.
Rowan was led by Veneziano with three hits (four at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a home run. Shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) contributed with one hit (one at bat), three runs scored, two RBIs and a double. Designated player Ashley Landi (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) was two for three with one RBI and a double. Taraschi had one hit (three at bats) and drove in one run. Smith went one for two and scored once.
Iwanyk posted two hits in three trips to the plate for the Fords. Left fielder Beth Davis (jr. Minneapolis, MN/Blake School) and Crawford both had one hit (three at bats).
Rowan scored two runs in the first inning. Veneziano reached base with a single and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Minch. Landi’s double to right field plated Minch. In the bottom of the third, Minch doubled in Smith and Taraschi’s single knocked in Minch. The Profs scored one run in the fifth and sixth innings. Landi’s single brought home Minch in the fifth and Veneziano hit a solo homer in the sixth.
The Profs host Farmingdale State College on Tuesday, March 30 at 3 p.m.
