GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won its home opener against Gwynedd-Mercy College, 8-0 in six innings and righty Jamie Minix pitched a no-hitter. The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to field conditions.
Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) pitched six scoreless innings for her second shutout of the season. She (5-3) struck out three batters. Left hander Sydney Norton (fr. Waterford, MI/Waterford Mott) had the loss. Rowan has a 10-5 record while Gwynedd-Mercy drops to 1-8 overall.
Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) paced the Profs with three hits in three at bats, two RBIs, three runs scored and a triple. Designated player Ashley Landi (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with three hits (four at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a double. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) registered three hits in four at bats, one RBI, one run scored and a triple.
Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.), catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) and first baseman Stephanie Labas (fr. Millville, NJ/Millville) each added one hit and a RBI. Shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) had one hit and scored one run apiece.
Rowan had a 3-0 lead after scoring one run in the first inning and two in the third. In the first, Veneziano got on base with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Taraschi doubled home Minch in the third inning. Labas’ RBI single scored Taraschi.
The Profs added one run in the fourth inning when Landi plated Veneziano with a single. Rowan was ahead 7-0 after scoring three runs in the fifth. Leskanic and Roselle came home on Veneziano’s triple. Smith followed with a triple that scored Veneziano. The game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning because of the eight run rule. Leskanic’s game-ending single brought home Landi who reached base with a double.
Rowan is home again on Thursday, March 25 against Haverford College at 3 p.m.
