KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team ended its Florida trip with two wins at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday. Rowan defeated St. Norbert College (WI), 1-0 in the first game and won 9-4 against Hood College (MD) in the second.
Right hander Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) pitched a complete game for the win over St. Norbert. Minix (4-3) gave up four hits and totaled six strikeouts. Shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) went two for three at the plate and scored the winning run. First baseman Stephanie Labas (fr. Millville, NJ/Millville) had a RBI single in two at bats. Catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) and third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) each added a hit.
For the Green Knights (5-4), center fielder Stephanie Ortiz, designated player Kayla Krueger, pinch hitter Jessica Kropp and third baseman Collette Ullmer each had one hit. Righty Kari Corbeille took the loss on the mound.
The Profs’ winning run came in the bottom of the second inning. Minch led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Taraschi. With two outs, Labas singled to right center field, scoring Minch.
Against Hood (5-4), right hander Erika Knorr (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) was the winning pitcher in relief. Knorr (2-0) only allowed three hits in five innings. Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and three RBIs. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) chipped in with two hits in four at bats, three runs scored, one RBI, one double and a home run. Taraschi registered three hits (three at bats), two RBIs, one run scored, a double and a homer. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (sr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), Minch and Labas each had one RBI.
Catcher Brittni Jones was three for four with two RBIs, one run scored and a double for the Blazers. Left fielder Erin McNally, pitcher Jordan Wolford and shortstop Kandie Glenn had one hit apiece. Second baseman Casey Dunn was one for three with one RBI.
The Profs trailed 4-3 going into the top of the third inning. Taraschi started the inning with a solo home run. DiDonato walked and left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) singled. Smith plated DiDonato and Roselle with a single. Rowan was ahead 6-4 then went on to score one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth.
With two outs in the fifth, Veneziano recorded a solo homer. In the sixth, Minch’s RBI single brought home designated player Ashley Landi (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) who got on base with a double. Labas knocked in Minch with a single.
Rowan (9-5) hosts Gwynedd-Mercy College in its home opener on Tuesday, March 23 at 3 p.m.
