KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team won two games at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday. The Profs defeated McDaniel College (MD), 3-2 and Simpson College (IA), 8-4.
Against McDaniel (1-4), right hander Michelle Black (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) earned the win in relief. She tossed the final three innings without giving up a run. Pitcher Ashley Meister took the loss for the Green Terror.
Rowan was led by catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) with one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) went one for four with one RBI. Shortstop Ashley Minch (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) added one hit (two at bats) and one run scored.
For McDaniel, designated player Erinne Warrenfeltz and shortstop Lauren Toomey both registered one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Catcher Hope Battista and second baseman Beth Ann Fusco each contributed with one hit and one run scored.
McDaniel scored one run in the bottom of the second and third innings. In the second, Toomey single in Battista, while Warrenfeltz drove in Fusco with a single in the third. Rowan tied the game (2-2) with two runs in the top of the fourth. Taraschi reached base on an error and she was replaced by pinch runner Lauren Davis (so. Ewing, NJ/Ewing). Minch’s singled moved Davis to third. Davis crossed the plate on a double steal. Smith followed with a single that plated Minch. In the top of the seventh, Taraschi scored on an error.
In the nightcap, right hander Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw seven innings, allowing one earned run. She struck out nine batters. Pitcher Jessica Toyne gave up three earned runs in two innings for the loss.
Taraschi recorded two hits (four at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a double. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (sr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) went two for four with two RBIs. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) compiled one hit (three at bats), three RBIs and one run scored. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) added one hit (two at bats), one RBI and a triple.
For Simpson (6-5), shortstop Keri Sorensen totaled two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Left fielder Kelsie Host was one for two with one RBI and one run scored. Designated player Vernica Roshek scored once and drove in one run.
Rowan went up, 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning on Veneziano’s three RBI single. In the top of the third, Host knocked in second baseman Kortney Proctor with a single. Taraschi doubled in designated player Ashley Landi (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and later scored on an error in the bottom half.
The Red Storm cut the deficit to two (6-4) in the top of the fifth. Sorensen had a RBI single and two runs scored on two errors. In the bottom of the fifth, Leskanic tripled in a run and DiDonato had a RBI single.
On Tuesday, March 16, Rowan (5-3) plays Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 11 a.m. and Millikin University at 3 p.m.
