KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Rebel Spring Games. In the first game, the Profs lost to Trine University (IN), 2-0. Rowan defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 5-1 in the second game.
Against Trine (4-4), pitcher Andi Gasco pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 10 batters. She was also one for three at the plate with one RBI. Pitcher Michelle Black (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) took the loss for the Profs. She gave up two unearned runs and recorded seven strikeouts. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) was two for three, while second baseman Jenna DiDonato (sr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had one hit (two at bats).
Trine went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Third baseman Claire Will came home on a ground out by first baseman Cassie Byrd. In the sixth, Grasco single in left fielder Tara Sipperly.
Versus the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (5-3), pitcher Jamie Minix (so. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw a complete game, allowing one earned run and striking out two hitters. Pitcher Ashley Feindel struck out five batters in six innings for Coast Guard.
Rowan right fielder Heidi Smith (sr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) went one for three with a double and one RBI. Left fielder Casey Roselle (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) added one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) and DiDonato contributed with one hit and one run scored apiece.
The Profs went up 4-0 with two runs in the first and second innings. Designated player Ashley Landi (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and DiDonato both scored on an error in the first. In the second, pinch runner Nicole Escudero (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Roselle came home on an error. In the top of the fifth, Coast Guard shortstop Becky Miller drove in first baseman Maddie Buchert with a single. Rowan added one run in the bottom half. Smith double and Taraschi scored.
Rowan (3-3) plays McDaniel College (MD) and Simpson College (IA) on Sunday, March 14 at 3 and 5 p.m. respectively.
