Rowan Women Take Second; Men Finish Fourth at NJAC Indoor Track Championships

BRONX, NY – The Rowan University men’s and women’s indoor track teams competed at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships on Monday night. The women took second place among nine teams with 116 points, while the men finished fourth out of nine schools with 65 points. The meet was held at the 168th Street Armory.

The College of New Jersey men (177 points) and women (178 points) were both crowned the conference champions. The Lions have won every NJAC title since the conference began holding the meet in 1998.

Jenn Rawls (fr. Runnemede, NJ/Highland Reg.) was the winner in the women’s one mile with a time of 5:00.50. She broke her own school mark (5:11.82), which she set earlier this season. Rawls also surpassed the previous NJAC Championships record of 5:00.87 held by Stephanie Herrick (TCNJ in 2008). Jena Peacock (so. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) was second in the one mile (5:04.09). Rawls’ and Peacock’s times were better than the NCAA provisional (5:05.00). Rachel Byrne (fr. Shamong, NJ/Holy Cross) came in third place in the 800 meters (2:17.66). Her time topped the University record of 2:20.70 by Linda Vaughan (1990).

Kyle Hayes (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) won the men’s long jump with a distance of 22’0.25” (6.71 meters). He also placed eighth in the triple jump with 41’0.5” (12.51 meters). In the shot put, Joseph Carmichael (fr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) and Pierre James (fr. Somerset, NJ/Franklin) took second (51’7.75”, 15.74 meters) and third (50’11.5”, 15.53 meters) respectively. Carmichael’s throw was a NCAA provisional (51’0”, 15.54 meters). Eric DuBois (so. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) finished second in the 3000 meters (8:49.48).

Ashley White (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) was second in the women’s 5000 meters (18:46.55) and third in the 3000 meters (10:54.38). Amirah Muneer (so. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) had a third place in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.20. Heidi DeGuzman (so. Central Islip, NY/Pennsauken) captured third in the 55 meter dash (7.38) and sixth in the 200 meters (26.55). Jacqui Nisbett (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) came in second in the triple jump (33’10”, 10.31 meters), sixth in the 55 meter hurdles (9.01) and eighth in the long jump (15’10.5”, 4.84 meters).

Eileen O’Mara (so. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Twp.) placed fourth in the one mile (5:30.60) and fifth in the 3000 meters (11:37.71). Danielle Czohla (so. Lafayette, NJ/High Point Reg.) was fifth in the one mile (5:41.34), while Stephanie Vagie (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and Liz Guarini (jr. Steinertville, NJ/Steinert) were sixth (11:38.78) and seventh (11:46.59) respectively in the 3000 meters. Joy Hanke (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) claimed fifth place in the 5000 meters (19:50.91) and Rose Johnson (so. Willingboro, NJ/Holy Cross) had a sixth place in the high jump (5’0.25”, 1.53 meters).

In the 800 meters, Lisa Jones (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) finished sixth (2:26.72), followed by Christina Huynh (fr. Lake Hiawatha, NJ/Parsippany) seventh (2:26.77) and Alivia Royds (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) 10th (2:33.76). Tiffany Chamberlain (fr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) took seventh in the 400 meters (1:01.92) and Beverlee Brownlee (fr. Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) was 10th (1:02.14).

The women’s distance medley captured second place in 12:59.78. The relay was comprised of Byrne, Brownlee, Rawls and Raneeka Doharty (so. Orange, NJ/Orange). Rowan came in third in the 4x400 meter relay (4:08.68) with Muneer, Brownlee, Chamberlain and Nisbett. Muneer, DeGuzman, Brownlee and Sylvia Mosley (so. Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) made up the fourth place 4x200 meter relay (1:46.58).

For the men, the distance medley finished second with a time of 10:35.14. The relay consisted of Jake McCormack (so. Cliffwood, NJ/Matawan Reg.), Daniel Collier (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Ja’Ron Morgan (so. Burlington, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) and DuBois. The 4x200 meter relay team of Josh McGriff (fr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.), Jayce Maxwell (so. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), Julius Grayson (so. Hempstead, NY/Hempstead) and Hayes took fourth place (1:32.19). Collier, Nick Huddy (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.), Matt Crosta (so. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) and Tom Austin (so. Mantua, NJ/West Deptford) ran on the fifth place 4x800 meter relay (8:24.13).

Stephen Mennitt (fr. Edison, NJ/Edison) came in fourth in the 5000 meters (15:46.57). McCormack had a fifth place in the 3000 meters (9:04.23). Kevin Gauntt (sr. Marlton, NJ/Seneca) was seventh in the 55 meter hurdles (7.91). Brian Quilty (jr. Brick, NJ/Saint Rose) took eighth in the one mile (4:40.11) and 3000 meters (9:23.25).

In the 800 meters, Huddy captured seventh (2:00.68), followed by Crosta ninth (2:02.38). Jeff Terebey (jr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) finished 10th in the 5000 meters with a time of 16.42.74. Brian Makinson (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) tied for 10th place in the high jump with a height of 5’10” (1.78 meters).

Rowan travels to the New York University Fast Track Invitational on Friday, February 26 at 1 p.m. The meet will be held at the 168th Street Armory in Bronx, NY.
