Kean Defeats Rowan, 76-55

UNION, NJ – The Kean University women’s basketball team defeated visiting Rowan University, 76-55 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Monday.

The Cougars have a 24-1 record with a 23 game win streak. They finish undefeated in the conference with a 13-0 mark. Kean will receive a bye in the first round of the NJAC Championship Tournament as the number one seed from the South Division.

Forward Tiffany Patrick (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) led the Cougars with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Naimah Clemons (fr. Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) followed with 16 points while forward Danielle Brown (sr. North Brunswick, NJ/St. Peter’s) chipped in with nine points and 10 boards.

The Profs are 15-8 overall and 8-4 in the conference. Forward Amanda Jennings (sr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) totaled 19 points and six rebounds. Guard Lauren Creel (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) contributed with 11 points. Guard Gina Catanzariti (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) grabbed seven boards. Guard Alissa Lamey (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) registered six steals and four assists.

Rowan started the game with a 10-4 run in 4:32. Jennings scored eight points and Catanzariti added two. Clemons answered with a layup (14:44) and Patrick made two foul shots (13:47) to pull within two points (10-8). Catanzariti had a free throw (12:57) and Clemons followed with a three-pointer (12:02) that tied the score at 11. The game was tied five more times before Kean took the lead for good. Jennings knotted the score at 23 with a jumper (5:19). Guard Melissa Beyruti (sr. Union City, NJ/Union Hill) hit a three (5:07) and a jumper (4:52) for a five point advantage (28-23). Patrick added a layup (3:41) and guard Brittany Powell (so. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) had two foul shots (2:39) that put Kean ahead 32-23. Rowan answered with a 6-2 run to end the period down by five points (34-29).

The Cougars opened the second half with 13 straight points for an 18 point lead (47-29) at 16:26. Patrick led the way with nine points and Clemons scored four. Creel had a three-point play with a layup and foul shot (15:54) that made the score 47-32. Clemons’ three-pointer put Kean up by 20 points (54-34) with 13:18 remaining. Rowan trailed by 16 points (58-42) after a jumper by Creel at 10:57. Brown’s free throw at 8:10 gave Kean a 22 point advantage (66-44). Patrick had a layup that made the score 74-51 with 4:05 on the clock. The 23 points was the Cougars’ biggest lead of the game.

Rowan ends the regular season at home against Rutgers-Camden on Wed., February 17 at 6 p.m.
