GLASSBORO, NJ – The Wesley College women’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 73-70 in a nonconference game on Tuesday night.
The Wolverines improve to 5-3 overall while the Profs have a 6-5 record. Forward Angie Owens (sr. Seaford, DE/Seaford) led Wesley with a game-high 25 points. Guards Jazmine Miller (so. Dover, DE/Dover) and Katie Kirk (so. Drexel Hill, PA/Archbishop Prendergast) each contributed with 12 points. Forward Allison Beddia (sr. New Castle, DE/Delcastle) grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and Miller registered 11. Guard Cory Boyd (sr. Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant) collected 10 assists.
For Rowan, forward Lauren Gregg (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) totaled 20 points and eight rebounds. Forward Brittany Baum (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) registered 13 points and nine rebounds. Guards Lauren Creel (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) and Ashley Russo (so. Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) scored 11 points apiece. Creel also pulled down seven boards.
Wesley trailed 37-23 after the first half. At 18:23, Gregg’s layup put Rowan ahead 41-30. The Wolverines followed with nine straight points to cut the deficit to two (41-39) at 16:33. Owens scored four points, guard Rachelle Allen (so. Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) followed with three and Boyd had two. Baum made the score 45-39 with a layup at 15:22. With 12:45 left, Beddia sank three foul shots and Wesley was down by one point (49-48). Gregg hit a three at 10:30 for a two point advantage (56-54). Owens’ jumper at 9:23 tied the score at 56. At the nine minute mark, Gregg had a basket that put the Profs up 58-56.
Kirk nailed a three (8:33), Owens had a free throw (7:53) and Kirk had another three-pointer (7:02) to take the lead (63-58). Rowan pulled within one point at 5:45 (63-62) and at 4:00 (67-66). Miller had a layup at 2:20 to lead by five points (72-67). The Profs made three straight free throws and pulled within two points (72-70) at the 45 second mark. With five seconds left on the clock, Miller sank the first of two foul shots to end the game.
In the first half, Rowan was ahead by 14 points (19-5) after a layup by guard Alissa Lamey (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.). Owens’ two fouls shots at 11:17 pulled Wesley within six points (19-13). Kirk hit a three at 8:32 and the Wolverines trailed by three (24-21). Miller followed with a layup at 7:01 that made the score 24-23. The Profs pulled away with 13 unanswered points to end the period (37-23). Russo contributed with six points in the surge.
After the holidays, Rowan plays at home on Wednesday, January 5 against Kean University at 6 p.m.
