GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team won 77-57 over Penn State Abington on Tuesday night.
The Profs are 5-6 overall while the Nittany Lions drop to 0-8 on the season. Rowan had four players that scored in double figures. Guard Roger Loatman (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) came off the bench for 17 points. Forward Steve Secula (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.), guard Sean Hughes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) and center Chris Gebhart (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) each contributed with 11 points. Secula grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Guard Jason Rosenberg (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) dished seven assists and had four steals.
For Penn State Abington, forward Joshua Howard totaled 11 points and six rebounds. Forward Donald De Leo and guard William Alton scored 10 points apiece.
In the first half, the Nittany Lions led by five points (8-3) after a three-pointer by guard Cordia Mosley at 16:14. Loatman’s jumper at 10:42 pulled the Profs within two points (11-9). Hughes sank two foul shots and cut the deficit to one (14-13) with 7:28 remaining. Johnson made a layup and a free throw at 6:43 which tied the score at 16. The Profs tacked on seven points to go ahead 23-16 at 4:02. Loatman contributed with three points while Secula and Rosenberg had two apiece. Secula’s layup at 2:09 increased the lead to 11 (29-18). Penn State Abington answered with five straight points and Loatman had the final basket (:26) of the period. Rowan was ahead 31-23 at the break.
The Nittany Lions tied the score at 33 (18:11) in the second stanza. The Profs had four straight baskets to lead by eight points (41-33) at 16:55. Hughes and Gebhart made two each. De Leo’s three at the 15 minute mark pulled Penn State Abington within five points (43-38). A 7-0 surge put Rowan ahead 50-38 with 12:02 remaining. The closest the Nittany Lions came was nine points (54-45) after Alton’s jumper at 9:55. Rowan gradually pulled away and had a 24 point lead (72-48) after guard Kendall White’s (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) layup (5:05). Loatman scored 10 second half points.
Rowan is back in action after the holidays on Wednesday, January 5 at home against Neumann University at 8 p.m.
