CHESTER, PA – The Rowan University women’s basketball team lost at Widener University, 96-79 in a nonconference game on Saturday.
The Pride has a 10-1 record with an eight game win streak while the Profs are 6-4 overall. Five Widener players scored in double figures. Guard Jennifer Egee (fr. Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) led the way with 20 points. Forward Vanessa Hejnas (so. Delran, NJ/Delran) contributed with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Guard Kate Dellinger (so. Wrightsville, PA/Eastern) chipped in with 14 points.
Forward Francesa Lee (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) and guard Joanna Persiano (fr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) added 11 points apiece. Lee also grabbed 12 boards and guard Lil Carney (so. Narberth, PA/Lower Merion) recorded 14 assists.
For Rowan, forward Brittany Baum (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) registered a career-high 30 points. Forward Lauren Gregg (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) scored 11 points and had seven rebounds. Guards Gina Catanzariti (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Bria Hill (fr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) had seven points apiece.
The score was tied four times in the first half before Widener took the lead for the remainder of the game. Guard Alyssa Wiggins (fr. Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) made a jumper that tied the score at 13 (13:12) for the Pride. Egee’s three-pointer made the score 18-14 at 11:25. Baum followed with a layup (11:08) that cut the deficit to two points (18-16). Widener scored 10 straight points for a 12 point lead (28-16) at 9:41. Egee and Persiano each scored five points.
The Pride was ahead by 16 points (36-20) after a three-pointer by Egee with 6:50 remaining. Lee’s layup stretched the lead to 22 points (47-25) with 3:30 on the clock. Rowan ended the period with six unanswered points and trailed 47-31. Gregg contributed with four points and guard Christine Gannon (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) had two. Egee finished with 15 first half points.
Widener started the second period with a 12-4 surge to lead by 24 points (59-35) at 17:10. Rowan responded with a 10-2 run and trailed 61-45 at 14:53. Baum totaled seven points and Gregg added a three. Dellinger made a layup (11:26) and two foul shots (11:08) for a 24 point advantage (77-53). Her jumper with 6:16 left put the Pride up by 26 points (93-67). The Profs trailed by 17 points (94-77) after two free throws by guard Chanella Banta (jr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) with 1:32 left. Baum led all scorers with 23 points in the second half.
Rowan plays next at home on Tuesday, December 21 against Wesley College at 6 p.m.
