YORK, PA – Forward Lauren Gregg scored 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Rowan University to a 64-60 victory over York College (PA) in a nonconference game on Monday.
Rowan improves to 6-3 on the season. The Profs have won four straight games. York has a 6-4 record. Gregg made 12 of 27 field goals. She also posted five blocked shots. Forward Brittany Baum (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) compiled 13 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists. Guard Ashley Russo (so. Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) added 11 points and six boards off the bench.
For the Spartans, guard Kelsey Murphy (fr. Olney, MD/Good Counsel) registered 21 points. Guard/forward Brittany Hicks (fr. Dover, PA/York Catholic) followed with 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Guard/forward Gayle Exley (sr. Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Guard Aja Wallpher (fr. Ellicott City, MD/Seton Keough) dished six assists.
York was ahead, 36-34 at halftime. The Spartans started the second period with a 21-9 surge to go up by 14 (57-43) at 10:52. Murphy scored 11 of the 21 points. Rowan answered with a 10-0 run to pull within four (57-53) at 6:09. Gregg recorded seven points, Baum made two foul shots and Russo had one. After a free throw by Hicks (5:43), the Profs trailed by five (58-53). Baum (5:26) and Gregg (4:30) each had a layup to pull with one (58-57).
Rowan guard Gina Catanzariti’s (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) basket at 3:48 gave the Profs a one point lead (59-58). Haley put the Spartan back up by one (60-59) with a layup at 2:41. Gregg’s jumper at 2:23 made the score, 61-60. Russo sealed the win with a three-pointer at the 28 second mark. Murphy totaled 12 points in the second half, while Gregg had 11.
In the first period, the game was tied three times. The last one (12-12) came at 10:48. Hicks’ layup at 7:26 gave York an 18-13 advantage. Rowan came within one on a layup by Gregg with 5:34 on the clock. The Spartans were ahead, 23-22 at 5:07. York scored the next six points to go ahead, 29-22 with 3:43 remaining. Forward/center Jaimie Sapp (sr. Bluemont, VA/Loudoun Valley), Hicks and Wallpher each had a basket.
After two free throws by Baum (3:34), Murphy’s three-pointer (3:22) pushed the lead to eight (32-24). Rowan had an 8-2 spurt to cut the deficit to two (34-32) with 31 seconds left. Gregg scored four points, while Baum and Russo each had two. Wallpher sunk two foul shots (:14) and Gregg added a layup (:06) to close out the period. Gregg posted 14 points and 11 boards in the half. Murphy recorded nine points for the Spartans.
Rowan travels to Widener University on Saturday, December 18 at 1 p.m.
