GLASSBORO, NJ – The Alvernia University women’s basketball team defeated host Rowan University, 71-60 on Monday night. It was the home opener for the Profs.
The Crusaders (2-3) were led by forward Allie Toczylowski (jr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Center Angela Altemose (jr. Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM) followed with 20 points and 13 boards. Guard Brittany Young (fr. Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Reg.) chipped in with 10 points. Guard Shanaye Glenn (fr. Coatesville, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) collected eight points, six rebounds and five steals.
For Rowan (2-3), guard Gina Catanzariti (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored 14 points. Guard Christine Gannon (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) totaled 12 points. Forward Lauren Gregg (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) pulled down a game-high 14 boards. Guard Lauren Creel (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) had nine points and five rebounds.
The second half started with the Profs down by three points (30-27). Catanzariti had a jumper that tied the score at 36 (16:16) and a foul shot for a one point advantage. Toczylowski’s layup put the Crusaders up by one (38-37). Rowan had a 5-0 run to take the lead by four points (42-38) at 14:34. Gannon made three points while Gregg added two. Alvernia came back and tied the game at 42 (12:14) with two free throws by Glenn. Gannon’s foul shot 12:10 put Rowan ahead 43-42.
Altemose nailed two foul shots (11:53) that put the Crusaders up 44-43. Alvernia pulled away with nine more points for a 10 point advantage (53-43) with 8:13 remaining. Young scored four points and Toczylowski followed with three and Glenn had two. The closest the Profs came was five points (55-50) at 5:42 after guard Bria Hill (fr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) made a layup. Guard Julie Hahn’s (jr. Warrington, PA/Central Bucks S.) two foul shots with 3:08 left put Alvernia ahead by 11 points (64-53). Toczylowski compiled 18 points in the second half while Gannon scored 10.
The score was tied three times in the first period. The last tie (8-8) came at 15:41 when Altemose made the first of two foul shots. Her second free throw put the Crusaders up by one (9-8). Creel hit a jumper at 15:31. Alvernia answered with three straight baskets for a five point advantage (15-10) with 13:29 on the clock. Toczylowski made the first one and Altemose followed with two in a row. Young’s layup at 10:38 made the score 19-12. Hahn sank two free throws at 7:26 to lead 23-14.
The Profs pulled within two points (25-23) after a 9-2 run that ended at 3:48. Forward Brittany Baum (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) contributed with four points in the surge while forward Erin Farrell (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Catanzariti added three and two points respectively.
With 1:14 left, Alvernia was ahead 30-25. Gregg made a layup at the 11 second mark and the Profs trailed by three points (30-27) at the intermission. Altemose totaled 14 points in the first half.
Rowan is home again on Thursday, December 2 against Valley Forge Christian College at 6 p.m.
