Women's Basketball Falls to Salisbury, 86-76 in Season Opener

SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury University women’s basketball team won 86-76 over Rowan University on Monday night. It was the season opener for both teams.

The Sea Gulls had three players that scored in double figures. Guard Glen Charlton (jr. Landover, MD/Duval) totaled a game-high 23 points and guard KC Curran (jr. Malvern, PA/Great Valley) followed with 22. Charlton and Curran also grabbed seven and six rebounds respectively. Guard Chante McKinney (sr. Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) contributed with 15 points, six boards and six assists. The Sea Gulls had eight rebounds apiece from guard Milan Dry (jr. Baltimore, MD/Dunbar) and forward Emily Bowles (so. Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus).

For the Profs, forward Lauren Gregg (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) scored 21 points. Guards Gina Cantanzariti (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Ashley Russo (so. Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) added 11 points apiece. Catanzariti also pulled down five rebounds.

The Sea Gulls were ahead 42-38 after the first half. In the final period, Salisbury had a nine point advantage (53-44) at 15:40 after two foul shots by Curran. Catanzariti’s jumper at 13:04 pulled the Profs within three points (57-54). Curran hit two free throws at 10:49 and Salisbury was ahead 65-58. Rowan had seven unanswered points that tied the score at 65 with 8:29 remaining. Gregg contributed with four points and Russo had one. Forward Brittany Baum (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor) hit the tying basket.

At 8:11, Bowles made the score 67-65 with two free throws. Baum’s jumper tied the game with 7:33 on the clock. A layup by McKinney put the Sea Gulls up by four points (71-67) at 5:49. With 3:52 left, Russo cut the deficit to two points (73-71) with a layup. Curran hit a three at 3:32 to lead by five points (76-71). In the last 2:12 of the game, Salisbury made six of 10 foul shots to seal the victory. Charlton scored 12 points in the second half while McKinney had 10. The Profs were led by Gregg with 19 points.

In the first half, Salisbury led by five points (10-5) at 16:25. Rowan later trailed by two (11-9) after Catanzariti’s jumper. At 11:45, Bowles had two free throws that made the score 19-12. McKinney hit a three-pointer at 9:38 to lead by eight points (22-14). With 7:34 left, the Sea Gulls were up 24-19. The Profs had four straight foul shots by Baum and they trailed 24-23 at 6:58. Curran then scored six points for a seven point advantage (30-23). The Profs followed with seven unanswered points that tied the score (30-30) at the 4:44 mark. Russo had three points while forward Erin Farrell (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Catanzariti added two apiece.

With 57 seconds left, Dry’s jumper gave the Sea Gulls a seven point advantage (42-35). Catanzariti pulled the Profs within four points after a three-pointer at the 33 second mark. In the first period, Curran compiled 13 points and Charlton registered 11. Catanzariti scored nine points.

Next, Rowan travels to Messiah College for the Hampton Inn Tip-Off Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 19 and 20. Rowan faces Lycoming College at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Messiah on Saturday at 3 p.m.
