Messiah Beats Rowan, 4-0 in NCAA Division III Championship Tournament Second Round

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Messiah College women’s soccer team had a 4-0 victory over Rowan University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Sunday.

Messiah (21-0), the two-time defending national champion, advances to the sectionals next weekend. The Falcons will play Dickinson College (16-3-2) on either Friday, November 19 or Saturday, November 20.

Rowan ends the season with a 16-3-2 record. In the other first round on Saturday, Messiah College defeated Manhattanville College, 4-0 and Rowan had a 2-0 win over Stevenson University.

Messiah went ahead 1-0 at 29:50 in the first half. Back Alicia Frey (fr. Dillsburg, PA/Northern) tapped a direct kick to back Molly Bletz (sr. Carlisle, PA/Carlisle), who blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the net. With 10 seconds remaining, forward Olivia Scott (jr. Falls Church, VA/George Mason) headed in a corner kick by back Anne Trapp (so. Timonium, MD/Dulaney).

At 78:46 in the second, midfielder Leah Sipe (jr. Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) scored on a pass from back Katie Hoffsmith (sr. Manheim, PA/Manheim Central). With 2:02 left to play, midfielder Rachel Scheibeler (so. Montoursville, PA/Saint Francis University) sent a cross into the center of the box and forward Corinne Wulf (so. Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) deflected it into the lower left corner of the goal.

The Falcons took 22 shots and the Profs had six. Goalkeeper Autumn Reilly (jr. Saint Albans, VT/Essex) made two saves for Messiah. It marked her 19th shutout of the season. Profs’ goalkeeper Deana Wood (fr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) stopped four shots.
