Profs Roll Over Scarlet Raiders, 8-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Jess Babice and midfielders Audrey Gagnon and Evynn Wright each scored two goals to lead RowanUniversity to an 8-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night.

Rowan, ranked 22nd in the nation and third in the South Atlantic region, improves to 12-1-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Rutgers-Newark has a 5-8-3 overall record with a 2-3-2 NJAC mark.

Babice (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) added two assists. She now has 46 points on the season with 18 goals and 10 assists. Forward Veronica Rhea (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI) and midfielder Marina Mangano (so. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) each found the net once. Midfielders Dayna Sakalsky (fr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and Christie Fink (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) both had one assist.

Rowan took 26 shots, while Rutgers-Newark had three. Profs’ goalkeepers Deana Wood (fr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) and Jillian Brannan (jr. Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) each played a half, making one save apiece. Goalkeeper Kat Renteria (jr. North Bergen, NJ/Cliffside Park) stopped three shots for the Scarlet Raiders.

At 4:07 in the first period, Wright (jr. Marlton, NJ/Eastern Reg.) dribbled to the center of the box and hit the left side of the net to put the Profs up 1-0. Just under five minutes later, Rhea scored on a cross from Babice. At 16:22, Babice intercepted a pass and kicked it past the goalkeeper. Wright’s second goal at 24:43 gave Rowan a 4-0 halftime advantage. Babice picked up the assist.

Babice’s second goal came at 45:43 in the second. Sakalsky served the ball into the box and Babice kicked it into the left corner of the net. Gagnon (so. South Amboy, NJ/South Amboy) added goals at 49:43 and 75:47 to increase the lead to 7-0. Fink assisted on the first goal. Mangano ended the scoring at 79:13 went she sent the ball by the goalkeeper after a scramble in front of the net.

Rowan hosts Salisbury University in a nonconference game on Wednesday, October 20 at 7 p.m.
