NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark men’s basketball team rolled to a 73-46 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win over Rowan University on Saturday night.
The Scarlet Raiders had three players that scored in double figures. Forward DeShawn Singleton (sr. Passaic, NJ/Passaic) totaled 13 points. Guard Greg Moore (so. Jersey City, NJ/Bayonne) came off the bench for 12 points. Center Phil Barnes (sr. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Rutgers-Newark is 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Rowan has a 10-3 record with a 2-1 NJAC mark. For the Profs, forward Tyson Hartnett (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and guard Allen Pritchett (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) each scored seven points. Forward Derek Piccini (sr. Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield) and guard Kendall White (fr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) added six points apiece. Piccini also pulled down six boards.
The Scarlet Raiders started the game with an 11-2 run in 4:33. The Profs pulled within five points (11-6) after guard Sean Hughes (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) made two foul shots at 14:50. Hartnett nailed a three-pointer at the 12 minute mark to trail by six points (15-9). Rutgers-Newark went up 23-9 (9:26) after scoring eight straight points. Rowan trailed 27-14 with 7:20 remaining in the half. The Scarlet Knights tacked on six more points to lead 31-14 at 5:52. Singleton contributed with a jumper and two foul shots. Rutgers-Newark was ahead by 21 points (39-18) at the intermission.
In the final period, Barnes’ jumper at 15:59 made the score 50-20. Moore hit a three-pointer that increased the margin to 34 points (65-31) with 10:36 left. The Scarlet Raiders had their biggest lead of 37 points (70-33) at 6:57.
On Wednesday, January 13, Rowan is at home against conference opponent Ramapo College at 8 p.m.
