DOVER, DE – The Wesley College women’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 68-54 in a nonconference game on Monday night.

The Wolverines improve to 5-6 overall, while the Profs have a 7-4 record. Wesley was led by forward Angie Owens (jr. Seaford, DE/Seaford) with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Guard Cory Boyd (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant) added 14 points off the bench. Forward Allison Beddia (jr. New Castle, DE/Delcastle) totaled 13 points and eight boards.

For Rowan, forward Amanda Jennings (sr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) and guard Gina Catanzariti (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) each scored 16 points. Jennings also grabbed 10 rebounds, while Catanzariti had six. Guard Danielle Rohe (sr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) contributed with 12 points.

Wesley led 26-23 after the first period. The Wolverines opened the second half with an 8-0 run over the first 1:29. Guard Katie Kirk (fr. Drexel Hill, PA/Archbishop Prendergast) and Beddia each hit a three-pointer and Owens added a layup. Wesley was up 43-31 at 13:40. The Wolverines had an 11-2 surge to increase the lead to 21 points (54-33) with 9:52 on the clock. Rowan fought back with layups by Jennings (9:15) and forward Michelle Lala (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) (7:28) and a three-pointer by Rohe (7:09) to cut the deficit to 14 (54-40). Beddia's three-pointer stretched the advantage to 17 (57-40) at 6:19.

The Profs had a 7-0 run to pull within 10 points (57-47) with 2:53 left to play. Jennings scored four points, Catanzariti had two and Lala made a free throw. Owens’ layup at 1:56 increased the lead to 14 (61-47). Boyd sunk a foul shot with 44 seconds remaining for a 12 point advantage (64-52). Jennings hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 10 (64-54), but Boyd nailed four free throws (four attempts) to close out the game. Owens and Jennings both posted 12 points in the period.

In the first half, Wesley led by one (6-5) at 17:56. Rowan went on a 10-1 run to go up, 16-7 at 12:08. Catanzariti recorded six of the 10 points. A layup by Owens (10:53) and a three-pointer by guard Michele Mules (sr. York, PA/Susquehannock) (8:33) brought the Wolverines within four (16-12). The Profs were up, 21-14 at 6:28. Boyd and Mules each made three-pointers at 5:35 and 4:49 respectively to make the score, 21-20. At 2:23, Rowan was ahead, 23-20. Wesley guard Jazmine Miller (fr. Dover, DE/Dover) had layups at 2:00 and 1:20 and forward Jasmine Barksdale (fr. Pikesville, MD/Roland Park Country School) made two foul shots with 51 seconds left to put the Wolverines up, 26-23 at the intermission.

Rowan hosts Kean University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Wednesday, January 6 at 7 p.m.
