GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team came back for a 66-60 conference win over Richard Stockton College on Wednesday night.
With just under five minutes left to play, Rowan tied the score at 57 (4:50) with a foul shot by guard Alissa Lamey (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.). Guard Danielle Rohe (sr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) hit a three-pointer that made the score 60-57 at 4:03. The Profs increased their lead to six points (64-58) after guard Gina Catanzariti (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) made two foul shots with 12 seconds left. Guard Aliyah Nelson's (so. Pleasantville, NJ/St. Joseph) jumper with eight seconds on the clock to cut the deficit to four points (64-60). Rohe sealed the victory with two free throws at the five second mark.
The Profs were led by forwards Amanda Jennings (sr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Michelle Lala (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) each with 19 points. Lala also grabbed 12 rebounds. Catanzariti ended the game with 14 points and eight rebounds. Lamey totaled six assists and five steals.
Rowan has an overall record of 10-6 with a 4-2 New Jersey Athletic Conference mark. Richard Stockton is 7-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Ospreys had four players that scored in double figures. Forward Che’Na Thompson (fr. Salem, NJ/Salem) registered 13 points and guard Nancy White (so. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) followed with 12. Nelson compiled 11 points and center LaTonya Oliver (so. West Berlin, NJ/Overbrook) added 10. Forward Julia Fagan (jr. New Britain, CT/New Britain) pulled down 12 rebounds while Thompson and Oliver posted seven apiece.
The Ospreys started the second period with a four point lead (35-31). Jennings’ jumper at 17:42 tied the score at 35 for the Profs. Richard Stockton went back up 41-35 at 16:33 after scoring six straight points. Nelson had four of the points at the free throw line. Jennings made a free throw at 14:56 to trail 41-38. White’s jumper put the Ospreys ahead by seven points (45-38) at 13:56. Richard Stockton led 54-46 with 9:37 left in the game after a basket by Thompson. Rowan came back with an 8-1 run in 2:55 and trailed by one point (55-54). Lala scored four of the eight points. With 5:54 left, Lala sank two foul shots before Lamey’s free throw that tied the score (57-57).
The game was tied three times in the first half with the last one coming at 13:32 (15-15) when Lala hit a jumper. Richard Stockton then had baskets by Oliver (13:14) and Nelson (13:01) for a four point lead (19-15). Rowan trailed by two points (19-17) after Catanzariti’s jumper at 12:39. White followed with six straight points to put the Ospreys ahead 25-17 with 10:29 remaining. The Profs answered with an 8-2 run in 3:34 to cut the deficit to two points (27-25). Rohe contributed with four points while guard Allie Bassetti (so. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Jennings added two apiece. Forward Noelle Hogan’s (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) layup at 3:56 put Richard Stockton ahead by eight points (35-27). Lala (1:46) and Jennings (00:40) each scored a basket to pull within four points (35-31) at the intermission.
Next, Rowan is on the road at New Jersey City University on Saturday, January 23 at 2 p.m. while Richard Stockton hosts Ramapo at 3 p.m.
