MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Montclair State University women’s basketball team rolled to a 73-53 conference win over visiting Rowan University on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Hawks are 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Forward Catherine Cristino (sr. Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck) scored a game-high 17 points. Forward Kisandra Ayanbeku (jr. Brockton, MA/Randolph) followed with 15 points and nine rebounds. Guard Jamilee Pflug (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) totaled 11 points and five assists. Guard Jackie Berry (sr. Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Reg.) contributed with eight points, seven rebounds and nine assists.
The Profs have a 9-6 record with a 3-2 conference mark. Guard Gina Catanzariti (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored 13 points and had four rebounds. Forward Erin Farrell (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) registered 10 points and guard Danielle Rohe (sr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) added nine. Guard Alissa Lamey (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) dished four assists.
Montclair State started the game with nine straight points in 2:21. Ayanbeku made five of the nine points. Rowan pulled within two points (12-10) at 13:20 after a jumper by Catanzariti. The Red Hawks led by five points (20-15) at 9:45 then had seven straight to go up 27-15 (8:11). Ayankbeku had three points while Berry and Pflug each made two. Farrell’s layup with 3:34 remaining made the score 31-19. The Red Hawks closed the half with a 6-2 run for a 16 point (37-21) advantage at the break.
In the second period, Ayanbeku made a layup at 15:12 to increase the lead to 20 points (45-25). Catanzariti had a basket at 10:48 and the Profs trailed 55-37. Montclair State answered with 11 straight points for a 29 point advantage (66-37) at 7:53. It was the Red Hawks’ biggest lead of the game. Pflug and Cristino contributed with four points apiece.
Next, Rowan is at home on Wednesday, January 20 against conference opponent Richard Stockton College at 6 p.m.
