Rowan Wins 2-0 over Stevens in first round of Stockton Classic

POMONA, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer started the season with a 2-0 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology in the first game of the Stockton Classic on Friday.

In the second round on Saturday, Rowan plays Eastern University at 3 p.m. and host Richard Stockton College meets Stevens (0-2) at 5:30 p.m. On Friday, Stockton’s first game was against Eastern.

The Profs were up 1-0 after the first half on an own goal. Midfielder Nina Fragoso (so. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) took a corner kick at 37:20 and the ball was put in the net by a Stevens defender. In the second period, forward Veronica Rhea (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI) made the score 2-0 at 49:58. She hit the net with an assist from back Christine Foy (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert).

Rowan took 20 total shots while Stevens had five. Goalkeeper Sarah Volkomer (sr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) made two saves for the shutout. For the Ducks, goalie Kaitlyn McClymont (so. Corpus Christi, Texas) stopped six shots.
