Rowan Wins 3-1 Over Montclair State in NJAC Opener

MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer team started its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) schedule with a 3-1 victory at Montclair State University.

Forwards Veronica Rhea (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI) and Melanie Wittenberger (fr. Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) and midfielder Evynn Wright (so. Marlton, NJ/Eastern Reg.) each scored once. Rhea also had an assist along with midfielders Nina Fragoso (so. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and Katina Anthony (fr. Haddon Twp., NJ/Haddon Twp.).

Rowan has a 4-1-1 overall record. The Profs are ranked third in the South Atlantic Region Rankings and 22nd in the nation. Montclair State’s (4-2, NJAC 0-1) goal was scored by midfielder Jackie McGrath (jr. Vernon, NJ/Vernon) and back Nicole Anulewicz (jr. Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) had the assist.

Wright put the Profs ahead 1-0 at 16:25 and Rhea got an assist. McGrath tied the score two minutes later which ended the first half scoring. Rhea broke the tie at 63:18 with assists from Anthony and Fragoso. Wittenberger added an insurance goal that was unassisted with 15:16 left in the game.

Rowan totaled 19 shots and Montclair State took six. In the Profs’ goal, Jillian Brannan (so. Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) made four saves. For the Red Hawks, goalkeeper Leah Tepperman (sr. North Andover, MA/North Andover) turned away nine shots.

This week, Rowan hosts The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, September 23 in a 5 p.m. conference game. It is the first home game of the season for the Profs.
