GLASSBORO, NJ – The William Paterson University softball team remained unbeaten in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament with a 14-6 victory in five innings over The College of New Jersey on Friday. In the loser’s bracket, Montclair State University eliminated Kean University with a 6-0 victory while Ramapo College stayed alive with a 3-0 shutout over Rowan University.
The double elimination conference tournament continues at Rowan University on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. The NJAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Game 4: #6 Montclair State 6, #5 Kean University 0 (Kean is eliminated).
The sixth seed Montclair State University shut out number five Kean University, 6-0. The Red Hawks are 24-16 overall while the Cougars have a 19-19 record.
Right-hander Elia Persico (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) pitched a complete game for the win. It was Persico’s (4-2) second shutout on the season. Righty Cassie Shotwell (jr. Dunellen, NJ/Dunellen) took the loss on the mound. Shotwell (11-10) gave up six hits and six runs, five were earned.
For the Red Hawks, shortstop Shannon Mozek (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) went two for two with one run scored. Right fielder Kelly Nance (jr. Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) collected one hit (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. First baseman Amanda Livsey (jr. Congers, NY/Clarkstown N.) and second baseman Megan Durkin (jr. West Orange, NJ/West Orange) added one RBI apiece. Catcher Kacie Neurouter (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had one hit (four at bats) and one RBI.
Shotwell also contributed with two hits in three at bats and a double. Left fielder Lindsay Kennedy (so. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany), center fielder Allison Lizzi (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.), first baseman Katie Yard (so. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and designated player Allison Thibault (jr. Garfield, NJ/Garfield) all registered one hit.
MSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Nance drove in the first run with a single. Durkin walked with the bases loaded to score Nance. Neurouter singled in the third run. The Red Hawks tacked on one run in the third when Livsey came home on an error.
In the sixth inning, Montclair State added two insurance runs. Third baseman Samantha Depken (so. Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice. Mozek scored the final run on Livsey’s sacrifice fly.
Game 5: #4 Ramapo College 3, #1 Rowan University 0
The fourth seed Ramapo College blanked the top seed Rowan University, 3-0. The Roadrunners have a 26-10 record while the Profs are 31-9 overall.
Right-hander Deanna Giordano (so. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) pitched a complete game for her fifth shutout this year. Giordano (15-4) only allowed two hits and struck out seven batters. Righty Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) gave up four hits and three earned runs in four innings. Sasko (18-4) had five strikeouts.
Ramapo designated player Danielle Rothenberger (fr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was two for three with two RBIs, a double and a triple. Right fielder Brittney McKeon (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Center fielder Katie Donnelly (jr. N. Haldeon, NJ/Eastern Christian) chipped in with two hits (four at bats), a double and one run scored.
For Rowan, catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) and third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) each had one hit in three at bats.
The Roadrunners went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Donnelly posted a lead off double to center field. Left fielder Rachel Wong (so. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) followed with a walk. With one out, Rothenberger blasted a shot to center fielder for a triple that scored Donnelly and Wong. Ramapo’s third run came in the fourth inning. McKeon drove in shortstop Tiffany Fischer (fr. Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) with a single. Fischer got on base with a walk and stole second.
Game 6: #2 William Paterson University 14, #3 The College of New Jersey 6 (5 inn.)
The second seed William Paterson defeated the third seed The College of New Jersey, 14-6 in five innings. The Pioneers have a 31-7 record while the Lions are 24-16 overall.
William Paterson trailed 5-0 after two innings and it took the lead with six runs in the bottom of the third. TCNJ broke the tie with one run in the fourth. With one out, right fielder Kelly Armstrong (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) hit a double to center field. Shortstop Ellen Seavers’ (jr. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) single up the middle scored Armstrong.
The Pioneers answered with eight runs in the fifth and the game ended early because of the eight-run rule. Catcher Nicole Jimmerson (so. North Bergen, NJ/High Tech) came home on an error and pinch runner Danielle DeDomenico (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Meghan Reilly (sr. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex). Second baseman Lindsey Nadolny (so. Belford, NJ/Middletown N.) recorded an in the park grandslam. Left fielder Heather Mendez (so.l Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) drove in the last two runs with a double to right center field.
Nadolny finished the game with two hits (four at bats), five RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a home run. Mendez went two for three with three RBIs, one run scored and a double. Center fielder Christina Zippler (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with two hits (three at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a triple. Reilly added two hits (three at bats), one RBI and a double. Designated player Jenna Vitale (so. Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) and first baseman Ashlie Gaynor (so. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) each added two hits and one RBI.
Right-hander Kerrie Mascarelli (so. Montvale, NJ/Pascack Hills) was the winning pitcher in relief. Mascarelli (9-0) went 3.1 innings and only allowed two hits. Righty Lauren Fitzsimmons (fr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) took the loss. Fitzsimmons (9-4) pitched 1.2 relief innings, allowing five hits and four runs.
For TCNJ, Armstrong was two for three with two runs scored, one RBI, a double and a home run. She had a solo home run in the second inning, her fourth of the season. First baseman Caitlyn Seamster (so. Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) totaled one hit (three at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Third baseman Rachel Greeby (jr. Yardley, PA/Pennsbury), center fielder Danielle Hagel (jr. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest) and Seavers each contributed with one hit and one RBI. Greeby and Seavers also scored one run apiece.
