Profs Split Doubleheader with Scarlet Raptors

CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday. The Scarlet Raptors won the first game, 1-0 while the Profs took the second, 3-2 in eight innings.

Rowan has an overall record of 20-6 with a 7-1 NJAC mark. Rutgers-Camden is 17-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

In the first game, right-hander Ashley Jimenez (jr. Bellmawr, NJ/Triton Reg.) went the distance on the mound and only gave up two hits. Jimenez (7-2) struck out five batters. Righty Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) took the loss. Sasko (12-2) allowed two hits and the run was unearned. She totaled nine strikeouts.

The Scarlet Raptors’ winning run came in the bottom of the first inning. Catcher Erika Drayton (fr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) singled to left center field, scoring designated player Stephanie Klotz (jr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley). Klotz reached base on an error.

Right-hander Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) pitched eight innings for the victory in the second contest. Singer (8-4) scattered five hits and had six strikeouts. Righty Natalie Powell (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was the losing pitcher. She allowed four hits and had four strikeouts.

The Profs scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Sasko pinch hit and went to first on a walk. She was replaced by pinch runner Brit Evanick (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford). Evanick advanced to second on a sac bunt by catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) and moved to third on a fielder’s choice. Shortstop Ashley Minch (fr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) walked with the bases loaded and Evanick came home.

Rowan third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) was one for four with one RBI. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) registered two hits in three at bats. First baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Right fielder Heidi Smith (jr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) scored one run.

Drayton was one for three with one RBI in the second game. Second baseman Brooke Keenan (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) had one hit in three trips to the plate and one run scored. Center fielder Nikki DiVece (jr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook Reg.) added one hit (two at bats) and one run.

Rutgers-Camden got on the scoreboard first with one run in the top of the third. DiVece crossed the plate on an error. Rowan tied the score in the bottom half. Smith reach first on an error and later scored on error.

Both teams had one run in the sixth inning. Drayton’s single to left field sent home Keenan. With two outs, Veneziano singled to center field and she went to second on a wild pitch. Leskanic’s single plated Veneziano.

Rowan is on the road again at Kean University on Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m.
