Rowan Ends Regular Season with Doubleheader Split at The College of New Jersey

EWING, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a conference doubleheader at The College of New Jersey to end the regular season. The Profs won the first game with a 1-0 shutout while the Lions had a 5-3 victory in the second.

Rowan has an overall record of 30-8 and a 15-3 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Profs will be the number one seed in the NJAC Championship Tournament and will host a first round game on Tuesday, April 28 at 4 p.m. TCNJ is 23-15 overall with a 12-6 conference record. The Lions are the third seed in the tournament and play in the first round at home on Tuesday. The remainder of the conference tournament will be held at Rowan, Friday-Sunday, May 1-3.

Profs’ right-hander Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) pitched a complete game for the win and her 10th shutout of the year. Sasko scattered five hits and struck out seven batters. Pitcher Ashley Minervini (jr. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside) took the loss on the mound. Minervini (7-9) gave up four hits and one unearned run.

Rowan first baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) was two for three at the plate. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Right fielder Heidi Smith (jr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) had one hit in three at bats.

For TCNJ, third baseman Rachel Greeby (jr. Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) went two for three with a double. Left fielder Crystal Lee (fr. Dover, NJ/Morris Knolls), second baseman Colleen Cawley (so. Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) and right fielder Kelly Armstrong (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson) all added one hit.

Rowan scored its winning run in the top of the third inning. With one out, center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) reach base on an error and she advanced to second on a ground out. DiDonato hit a single that scored Brenner.

In the nightcap, Alex Sietsma (so. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) was the winning pitcher in relief. Sietsma (5-3) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one hit and one run. Right-hander Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) has a 13-5 record after the loss. Singer recorded eight strikeouts.

Sietsma also recorded a double and three RBIs. Armstrong had two hits (three at bats) and scored two runs. First baseman Caitlyn Seamster (so. Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) was two for three with two RBIs and one run scored. Lee crossed the plate twice.

For Rowan, catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) collected one hit (two at bats), one RBI, two runs scored and a home run. Designated player Ashley Landi (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) chipped in with one hit (three at bats) and a RBI. Veneziano posted a double and one run scored.

The Lions went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Seamster drove in the two runs with a single. The Profs got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Taraschi blasted a solo shot over the left field fence. TCNJ scored three runs in the fifth for a 5-1 advantage. Sietsma recorded a three RBI double. Rowan cut the deficit to two (5-3) after two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Veneziano led off with a double to left field and later scored on a ground out. Taraschi also came home on a ground out and Landi earned the RBI.
