GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team shut out visiting Swarthmore College in a nonconference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Profs won the first game, 8-0 in five innings and it marked head coach Kim Wilson’s 400th victory at the University. In the second contest, they had an 8-0 victory in six innings.
Rowan has an overall record of 28-6 while Swarthmore drops to 12-21 on the season. This week, the Profs are ranked first in the NCAA East Region and 16th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. Wilson, in her 13th season at Rowan, has a 401-144 won-loss record. Her career coaching record stands at 465-201.
In the first game, right-hander Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) threw a no-hitter and she struck out six batters. It was her ninth shutout of the year. Righty Marley Spector (2-2) took the loss for Swarthmore.
Third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) paced the Profs with two hits (three at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Designated player Ashley Landi (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with two RBIs apiece. Catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) and first baseman Nick Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) each had one hit and two runs scored.
Rowan scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Taraschi came home on a bases loaded walk by Landi for the first run. Veneziano crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice and Brenner recorded a two RBI double. Taraschi’s double in the fifth inning brought home second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert). Leskanic plated shortstop Ashley Minch (fr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and Taraschi with a double. Landi ended the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Veneziano.
Right-hander Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) scattered five hits and compiled six strikeouts for the win in the second game. Singer (12-4) has seven shutouts this season. Righty Kathryn Riley was the losing pitcher. Riley (7-9) went four innings and struck out seven hitters.
For Swarthmore, first baseman Krista Scheirer was two for two with one double. Shortstop Elizabeth Cushing, third baseman Maggie Vizcarra and Riley all had one hit.
DiDonato compiled three hits in three trips to the plate, two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Leskanic went three for four with one RBI, one run scored and a triple. Minch and Taraschi both registered two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Minch had one RBI and a triple while Taraschi posted two RBIs and a double. Landi contributed with two RBIs and a double.
Rowan went up 3-0 in the first inning. DiDonato doubled in the first run and came home on Minch’s triple. Taraschi plated Minch with a single. The Profs tacked on three more runs in the third inning. Taraschi had a RBI double and Landi drove in two runs with a double. In the fifth inning, pinch hitter Jamie Parks (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) tripled in Leskanic. The game ended in the sixth when Leskanic recorded a RBI single for the eighth run.
Rowan hosts conference opponent William Paterson University on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m.
