UNION, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader over Kean University on Monday. Rowan won the first game 7-0 and took the second, 9-1 in six innings.

The Profs improve to 22-6 overall and 9-1 in the conference. The Cougars have a 13-15 record with a 4-6 NJAC mark. Right-hander Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) was the winner in the first game. Sasko (13-2) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit. She struck out nine hitters. Righty Cassie Shotwell (jr. Dunellen, NJ/Dunellen) took the loss for Kean. Shotwell (6-7) gave up seven runs, three earned in seven innings.

Rowan second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) went one for four with three RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) added one hit (four at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a homer. First baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) registered two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) recorded one RBI and one run scored.

The Profs scored three runs in the fourth inning. Leskanic hit a two run shot and Brenner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, plating Veneziano. In the sixth, left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) crossed the plate on an error and DiDonato followed with a three run homer.

In the nightcap, right-hander Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) was on the mound for the final four innings to pick up the victory. Singer (9-4) surrendered one run on three hits, while striking out five batters. Righty Jess Matos (so. Carteret, NJ/Carteret) was the losing pitcher. Matos (3-2) threw 5.2 innings, allowing nine runs, six earned.

Profs’ catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) totaled three hits (four at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Roselle went two for two with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brenner added one hit (two at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double.

For the Cougars, center fielder Allison Lizzi (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) collected two hits (three at bats), one RBI and a double. Left fielder Lindsay Kennedy (so. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) was one for three with one run scored.

Rowan went ahead 3-0 with two runs in the first inning and one run in the second. Taraschi hit a two run homer in the first and Roselle’s sacrifice fly brought Veneziano home in the second. Kean cut the deficit to two (3-1) with one run in the top of the third. Kennedy reached base with a single and crossed the plate on a double by Lizzi.

The Profs tacked on one run in the fourth and four in the fifth. In the fourth inning, DiDonato knocked Roselle in with a sacrifice fly. Brenner’s double down the left field line scored shortstop Ashley Minch (fr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and Taraschi in the fifth. Brenner and Roselle both came home on an error. In the bottom of the sixth, Roselle hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, bringing in Leskanic.
